Education Minister Officially Opens Anglesey's First Green School

A new £3.7 million primary school in Anglesey which has been built using sustainable materials and the latest energy saving features has been officially opened by Education Minister Jane Hutt.

Ysgol Y Graig in Llangefni is the first new school to be built on the island since 2002 and has first class environmental credentials which include the school's ability to generate over 50% of its own energy.

The Minister was joined at the school by Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones. The visit falls as the Welsh Assembly Government marks the half-way point of the One-Wales programme, and is one of a series of 24 events, one for each month of the programme so far.

On a tour of the school Ms Hutt said that the school's green features were second to none and fit in with the Assembly Government's commitment to sustainable development and in particular with its increased investment in sustainable school buildings.

Ms Hutt said: "Building new schools fit for a sustainable future is a top priority for the Welsh Assembly Government - and we all have a role to play in the climate change challenge.

"Ysgol Y Graig is a shining example of how we can create eco-friendly school facilities which will benefit not only staff and pupils at the school but also the community and the environment for years to come."
