Aberdeen's Union Terrace Gardens To Receive £10m Transformation

Plans for an 'iconic' new £10 million building in Aberdeen has been approved by Aberdeen city council.

The project proposed by Peacock Visual Arts in partnership with the city's arts education, arts development teams and Citymoves will provide a range of educational facilities for the community.

The building will be known as the Centre for Contemporary Art and will be located along Union Terrace, with its entrance leading from the existing Victorian stairs near the statue of Robert Burns.

The environmentally friendly building, which will use geo-thermal and solar energy as its primary heating system, will largely be built underground, entrenched into the existing bank, and be no higher than the height of the wall running alongside Union Terrace.

Lindsay Gordon, director of Peacock Visual Arts said: "The innovative design of the structure would not ruin the vista but enhance it and attract visitors to the area. The architects, Brisac Gonzalez, have been very clever and innovative with the design and this building will open the gardens up.

"It is wonderful to receive recognition that this centre will deliver a beautiful, iconic building that puts Aberdeen on the cultural map where it belongs as a cosmopolitan 21st century city, while at the same time restoring the gardens as a safe, family-friendly destination for all of Aberdeen's communities."
