£3.6m Improvement Works Begin On M5 Junctions 14-15

Work to improve the road surface and strengthen bridges between junctions 14 and 15 of the M4 will begin on October 22 2007 and should be completed in March 2008.

The £3.6m scheme involves renewing seven miles of the road surface on the westbound carriageway of the M4 near Baydon. Work will also take place to strengthen the Membury footbridge and the Breach Copse, Inholmes and Bayfield accommodation bridges.

The new surface will give road users a quieter and smoother journey. The work being carried out on the bridges will enhance safety by improving their protection against impact.

Three lanes will be open in each direction during daytime works and occasional night time (10pm-6am) lane closures will be used as and when required.

For the safety of road users and the workforce, there will be a 50mph speed limit through the works enforced by average speed cameras. To minimise disruption to traffic a free recovery service will be provided for broken down vehicles.

Clive Cooper, Project Manager for the Highways Agency, said:"Safety of the road user is our top priority and we have planned this work very carefully with our contractors to coincide with the ongoing M4 communications upgrade. In doing so we hope to keep congestion to a minimum."

Real time traffic information for England’s motorways and major A roads is now available at
