Story Homes recently visited the Workington school to deliver a hands-on lesson on sustainability and modern housebuilding for the Year 5 class.
As part of their studies on renewable energy, the pupils welcomed David Brier, Group Designer at Story Homes, who outlined how sustainability is shaping the future of the housing sector. The session explored energy-efficient homes, thoughtful design and environmentally responsible construction methods.
Children were introduced to features used in contemporary Story Homes developments, including photovoltaic solar panels, EV charging points and air source heat pumps, which can help reduce household energy consumption and cut carbon emissions.
The workshop also highlighted Story Homes' Sustainable Story initiative, which focuses on creating well-designed homes and communities while lowering environmental impact and supporting future generations. The company is currently building nearby at Foxbridge Rise, where a range of energy‑efficient elements are being incorporated into new properties.
After the presentation, pupils became designers themselves, sketching concepts and floor plans for their own sustainable homes. The activity encouraged creativity and helped them consider how modern properties can be planned with the environment in mind.
The visit concluded with an appearance by Story Homes' mascot, Builder Bear, who posed for photographs and handed out goodie bags.
David Brier, Group Designer at Story Homes, said: "It was fantastic to visit St. Mary's Catholic Primary School and see the enthusiasm the pupils brought to the session. At Story Homes, sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and we hope the workshop inspired pupils to think about the role they can play in creating a more sustainable future. The pupils came up with some brilliant ideas for their own sustainable homes, and we hope the session inspired them to think creatively about the future."
Mia Lobb, teacher at St Mary's Catholic Primary School, added: "The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit from Story Homes and found the session both engaging and inspiring. As the class has been learning about renewable energy, it was a fantastic opportunity for them to see how sustainability is applied in real-world industries. We would like to thank Story Homes for delivering such a valuable experience for the children."
The initiative is part of Story Homes' ongoing engagement with local schools and communities, providing educational opportunities designed to inspire future generations.
