Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust has officially broken ground on the second phase of its £65 million redevelopment project at Lynfield Mount Hospital.
The major milestone follows final approval from the Department of Health and Social Care in January 2026 to push forward with the extensive transformation of the hospital's central building. The overarching programme is adopting a phased three-year strategy covering planning, construction, and refurbishment, with all hospital services remaining fully operational throughout the process.
Phase one of the project delivered vital enabling works to get the site ready. These works included clearing the former Estates and Facilities offices, temporarily moving the main entrance, and establishing both a new staff car park and a woodland wellbeing walkway for visitors.
With the official groundbreaking now complete, phase two will focus on constructing a new two-storey block containing two wards equipped with 100 per cent en-suite accommodation. The phase will also encompass the refurbishment of shared communal areas in the central building.
Therese Patten, Chief Executive of Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust, said: "This is a really exciting milestone for the Trust and our ambitious plans to deliver a facility that better supports the recovery and wellbeing of our people who use our services.
"The upgraded facilities will significantly enhance the experience of our patients and will help them to return to their communities as soon as they are able.
"The modernised spaces will also create a better working environment for our colleagues, supporting the Trust's ambition of being the best place to work."
A small celebration was held at the hospital to mark the commencement of this next stage.
Therese added: "Breaking ground on phase two of the redevelopment is the culmination of years of planning, commitment and support and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with and supportive of the project so far."
In March 2026, the Trust finalised a delivery contract with modular building manufacturer McAvoy, who arrived on site in April to prepare for the phase two works. By utilising an offsite precision manufacturing approach where structural modules are built in a factory before being transported and assembled on site, the project team will minimise disruption to healthcare services and local residents compared to traditional construction.
Martin O'Neill, Contracts Director at McAvoy said: "We are proud to mark the groundbreaking of this important redevelopment and to be helping deliver modern mental health facilities for the people who use Lynfield Mount Hospital's services.
"Our offsite manufacturing approach directly supports the delivery of flexible, healthcare accommodation, while maintaining high standards of quality and minimising disruption on site. We look forward to working closely with the Trust to help create an environment that supports patients, staff and the long-term future of the estate."
Phase two is anticipated to conclude by autumn 2027, signaling the start of the third phase. The complete overhaul of the hospital estate is currently on track for completion in early 2029.
Minister of State for Health Karin Smyth said: "It's fantastic to see work underway at Lynfield Mount Hospital - a major step forward for mental health services in Bradford, supported by £65 million of government investment.
"High-quality, modern facilities are essential to supporting recovery, and this new development will provide patients with a safe environment alongside improved spaces for the staff who care for them.
"This investment reflects our commitment to strengthening mental health services and ensuring they are fit for the future.
"There is more to do, but projects like Lynfield Mount show the real progress being made for patients, staff and local communities."
