Murphy, working within United Utilities' Enterprise framework, has completed tunnelling to install a new, larger sewer beneath Peel Green Road in Eccles, a key step intended to lower the risk of flooding in the area. The road was reopened in time for the Bank Holiday weekend.
With this first phase finished, upcoming works will connect the new sewer to the existing network and bring it into operation. These activities are scheduled for later in the summer and will be delivered under lane closures.
Jim Scholes, Delivery Manager for United Utilities, shared: "The work on Peel Green Road is an important part of our wider work at Eccles wastewater treatment works. The completion of tunnelling activities is a big milestone for the area as we look to reduce the flooding risk to the local community. We'd like to thank them for their patience whilst this essential work has been taking place."
Nick Field, Project Manager at Murphy, said: "The Enterprise team worked together closely to ensure that Peel Green Road was delivered both sensitively and efficiently, given its residential setting. We carefully managed the process to ensure that Peel Green Road could be reopened as quickly as possible."
The scheme forms part of United Utilities' new Enterprise delivery model, which brings together seven design and construction partners — C2V, Costain, Jacobs, MWH, MMB, Murphy and Kier — alongside United Utilities in one integrated team.
Beyond Peel Green, United Utilities is investing more than £525m in Salford over the next four years to strengthen the sewer network and improve water quality. This includes upgrades to treatment works in Salford and Eccles, extra storage in the sewer network at a project off Liverpool Road, and a rainwater management scheme in Adelphi Village.
Company-wide, United Utilities is investing more than £13 billion to protect and enhance over 500 kilometres of rivers, lakes and bathing waters, while safeguarding drinking water supplies for millions of customers.
