Farrans has handed over the first of seven sections in Phase 2 at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA), part of a comprehensive refurbishment of the existing terminal building.
The initial handover comprises a revamped departures facility connected to the Phase 1 terminal extension, aimed at enhancing the passenger experience.
Phase 2 is being delivered in multiple sub-phases to minimise disruption and keep the airport operating as close to normal as possible during works in a live environment. Planned upgrades include new staircases, lifts and escalators to create a more open-plan layout complementing the lighter, brighter terminal extension. Reconfigured internal spaces will improve passenger flow, alongside brand new security and arrivals facilities, World Duty Free and additional shops, bars and restaurants.
By 2030, the regeneration has the potential to create 1,500 direct jobs at LBA and 4,000 indirect roles, contributing £940 million to the local economy. The programme will also support decarbonisation set out in the airport’s 2030 Net Zero Carbon Roadmap, with the installation of all-electric heating, lighting and new machinery, including baggage belts. It is expected that airlines attracted by the regeneration will accelerate the deployment of their newest, quietest and most efficient aircraft at the airport, reducing the overall environmental impact of operations.
