A new dedicated office has opened south of Market Weighton to serve as the primary construction base for the English onshore section of the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project. The facility is designed to bring together project teams and supply chain partners to ensure a collaborative approach as construction of the 68 km cable route advances.
The site consists of approximately 27 cabin units and parking for 90 vehicles, providing a central hub for the daily management, logistics, and coordination required for the underground cable works. The route runs from the landfall point at Fraisthorpe to a new converter station at Drax.
EGL2 is a joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission. Prysmian is responsible for the design, manufacture, and installation of the 505 km total cable, with Balfour Beatty delivering the onshore underground works.
Neil Lyons, EGL2 Project Director for National Grid, commented: "This new office plays an important role in bringing the project and contractor teams together in one place. Collaborative working is essential to delivering the onshore cable route safely and efficiently. Having a shared base close to the works helps us maintain high safety standards, plan effectively and manage construction in a way that is mindful of local communities."
The onshore construction involves various activities, including cable installation, jointing, and the eventual reinstatement of the land. By housing multiple teams in one location, the project aims to streamline planning and minimise local disruption.
Giuseppe Cardamone, Prysmian EGL2 Project Director, stated: "The opening of the Collaboration Office represents an important milestone in the ongoing collaboration between EGL2, Prysmian and Balfour Beatty. We are proud of what has been achieved and are excited about the opportunities ahead as we continue to deliver success together as part of the project."
Brendan Maloney, Balfour Beatty EGL2 Project Director, added: "The opening of the shared Collaboration Office represents an important milestone for the project, providing EGL2, Prysmian and Balfour Beatty with a dedicated space to work together and deliver the project collaboratively. The arrival of the Collaboration Office is also a moment to recognise the significant effort that has gone into making it a reality. Facilities like this do not appear overnight; they are the result of careful planning, coordination and strong teamwork across the project."
Once complete, EGL2 will use high voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea and underground cables to connect Peterhead in Scotland with Drax in North Yorkshire, strengthening the UK electricity network.
