The new Junction Mills building at Bradford College has been revealed following the removal of external scaffolding, marking a major milestone for the £19.3 million project on Thornton Road.
Scheduled to open this September, the four-storey development will specialise in future-facing industries, including digital engineering, advanced manufacturing, and electric/hybrid vehicle technology. The facility is expected to play a crucial role in bolstering low-carbon skills and technological capabilities across West Yorkshire.
The project was funded by a £17.8 million investment from the Department for Education's Further Education Capital Transformation Fund (FECTF), supplemented by a £1.5 million contribution from the college.
With the upper floors nearing completion, contractors Morgan Sindall Construction are now focusing on the ground floor and the commissioning of building services. The site is expected to be fully handed over by the end of June.
The building is designed to accommodate up to 650 students, providing them with access to industry-standard equipment to prepare them for careers in rapidly evolving sectors.
Pamela Sheldon, Head of Projects at Bradford College, said: "It's fantastic to see our new building revealed as we move one step closer to opening this amazing new facility. Junction Mills represents a significant leap in how we equip young people with the skills needed for a low-carbon economy, and it is fitting that a building dedicated to low-carbon skills should be constructed with sustainability at its core."
The development has already gained recognition for its environmental credentials, becoming the only new-build project in Yorkshire last year to achieve Morgan Sindall Construction's platinum certification for carbon savings. By utilising electric arc furnace (EAF) steel for the structural frame, the project saved 290 tonnes of carbon. Total savings across the design and construction phases reached 473 tonnes—the equivalent of heating 175 UK homes for a year.
Ben Hall, Morgan Sindall's Area Director for Yorkshire, added: "Working closely with Bradford College, we've been able to deliver our Intelligent Solutions to create genuine carbon savings across the lifespan of Junction Mills, while also creating a space that serves its students and staff well. This is a significant project for the college and for West Yorkshire more broadly. It's where the next generation of skilled workers will train, and that matters. We're proud to have built somewhere that gives students the environment they need to learn properly and go on to make a real contribution locally."
Junction Mills is a cornerstone of the college's broader £32 million estates strategy. This initiative also includes the recently opened Garden Mills—a facility for science, digital, and allied health—and upgraded T Level suites for sectors such as catering, media, and business.
