Braintree District Council is set to install new rebound goal units at Spa Road in Witham and Riverside in Braintree, aiming to boost physical activity and encourage wider community use of local parks.
The scheme is supported by £20,000 from the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). The durable, weather‑resistant structures will create flexible spaces for informal football and basketball, addressing growing demand for facilities that cater to older children and teenagers.
As part of the upgrade, existing stand‑alone basketball hoops will be removed and replaced with integrated hoops built into the rebound goal frames.
Cllr Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Transformation, the Environment and Customer Services, and Deputy Leader at Braintree District Council, said: "These modern, multi‑use structures will provide safer, more durable, and engaging spaces for football practice, basketball play, and general active recreation, helping young people make the most of their local parks.
"This investment is an example of the Council's ongoing commitment to improving community facilities and promoting healthy, active lifestyles for residents."
Works at Spa Road are scheduled from 31 March until 3 April, with Riverside due to run from 15 to 19 April 2026. There will be no disruption to play areas while work takes place.
