Ellesmere Port Market customers will soon be able to see the finished first phase of refurbishment, part of a project designed to enhance the experience for both shoppers and traders.
To enable traders to relocate into newly refurbished units ahead of Phase Two, the market will be closed from Monday 9 to Wednesday 11 February. Cafés will remain closed until Monday 16 February.
When the market reopens on Thursday 12 February, the entrance from the Port Arcades shopping centre will be back in use, with access from the car park also retained.
Councillor Nathan Pardoe, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Regeneration and Digital Transformation, said: "Thank you to the customers, market traders and staff who have supported Ellesmere Port Market throughout the first phase of refurbishment works.
"It's an exciting time for Ellesmere Port Market, with the second phase of works beginning in early February including new public spaces, seating, cycle parking and landscaping. As with the first phase of works, Ellesmere Port Market will remain open to customers, with customers able to visit and support their favourite traders."
The £8m programme has been carefully staged so traders can continue to operate while sections of the market are closed off for safe working and to keep disruption to a minimum. Improvements include a new façade, rooftop photovoltaic solar panels, new toilets, refurbished stalls and seating, a better layout and public Wi‑Fi. A flexible events space will also be created in the Flea Market area. Outside, plans feature an al fresco area, landscaping, cycle parking and additional seating.
To support accessible parking during the works, 20 replacement Blue Badge spaces have been provided at the rear of the market with directional signage, although some other spaces have been temporarily removed.
The refurbishment is expected to finish in late summer, when the entire market will reopen. The Ellesmere Port Town Centre regeneration project is funded by the government’s Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
