Esh Construction has completed the A1290 Dualling Works in Sunderland, delivering a significant enhancement to one of the North East’s key transport links.
Undertaken with IAMP LLP – the limited liability partnership set up by South Tyneside Council and Sunderland City Council – the scheme widened the former single carriageway, upgraded junctions and introduced improved walking and cycling provision across the 370-acre site.
The project forms part of a broader programme of infrastructure upgrades intended to unlock development at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP), a nationally important employment location for advanced manufacturing and automotive firms, including Nissan and its supply chain.
Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at Esh, said: "Delivering the A1290 Dualling Works has been a vital part of improving the region’s strategic road network and supporting future growth at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park.
"This project continues to demonstrate our capability to deliver complex civil engineering schemes that enhance connectivity and unlock development opportunities. Working collaboratively with Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council, we’ve provided a high-quality infrastructure upgrade that will serve businesses, commuters, and communities for years to come."
A total of 1,550 metres of the A1290 has been converted to dual carriageway, with most of the construction carried out off-line to limit disruption. The upgrade is expected to cut congestion, improve journey times and create safer, more sustainable travel choices. Complementary works included new drainage featuring swales and attenuation ponds, plus street lighting, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and landscaping.
Environmental measures were embedded in the design to manage surface water and protect local habitats. Throughout delivery, Esh liaised closely with stakeholders to minimise disruption and maintain access for residents and businesses.
Completion represents a key milestone in opening up further development at IAMP and beyond. It is a notable step towards better connectivity and economic growth across Sunderland and South Tyneside and is anticipated to create more than 7,000 jobs over the next 10 years.
Cllr Kevin Johnston, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Regeneration and Business at Sunderland City Council, said: "The completion of the A1290 Dualling Works marks yet another major milestone in the development of the International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP).
"Since the first building opened its doors in 2019, we've seen global firms such as Falco, SNOP, Jatco and AESC all make IAMP their home and the completion of these works will pave the way for further development as we seek to establish it as one of the UK’s most advanced manufacturing hubs."
