G F Tomlinson has delivered a £3.4m design-and-build project for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service: a new 741 sq m fire station in Worksop.
The facility includes meeting rooms and offices, three fire engine bays and a gym for firefighters. Outside, there is a three-storey training tower, a compound store, new parking and extensive hard and soft landscaping.
Built with renewable technology, the station's rooftop photovoltaic (PV) panels are designed to generate up to half of the building's energy needs. As a result, it has achieved an EPC A rating of 18, compared with around 26 for most comparable buildings.
The station forms part of the wider Vesuvius development – a multi-million-pound regeneration aiming to establish a prime industrial and business location in Worksop, with a mix of light industrial units, food and drink outlets and office space.
Replacing the ageing Eastgate station, which dated back to 1963 and was costly to run, the new site was made available early so IT teams could install communications systems to ensure a smooth transition.
Located on the former Vesuvius Brickworks, demolished in the late 2000s, the site underwent remediation works, including the removal of buried asbestos.
Social value initiatives included donating surplus materials, PPE and signage to Age UK – Men In Sheds, a local workshop for men aged 50+ to meet and undertake crafts for community causes. Participants, for example, helped create a dolls’ house for a local bereavement charity.
