A state-of-the-art health and wellbeing centre has opened in Tredegar, the South Wales town famously known as the 'birthplace of the NHS'.
The Bevan Health and Wellbeing Centre was officially unveiled by Jeremy Miles MS, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, during a plaque ceremony marking the milestone for the local community.
The project, delivered by Kier, has transformed the historic site where Aneurin Bevan, the locally-born founder of the NHS, was inspired to establish the National Health Service in 1948. The modern facility brings together a range of health services under one roof, including two GP practices, dental services, a prescribing pharmacy, and outpatient clinics.
While providing new and upgraded facilities, the project has also preserved a section of the original Tredegar General Hospital, built in 1904. Known as 'the heart building', this area now serves as a patient waiting space, maintaining a tangible connection to Bevan’s legacy in the town.
The centre has already received industry recognition, earning a 'highly commended' nod in the Capital Project of the Year category at the 2025 IHEEM Wales Regional Conference. It also won the 2025 Healthcare Design Award for Best Primary Care Design.
The Bevan Health and Wellbeing Centre represents a significant investment in the health of Tredegar residents, blending modern care facilities with a deep respect for the town’s historic role in the creation of the NHS.
