Winvic Construction Ltd has been appointed by Logistics Capital Partners (LCP) to deliver a new 220,000 sq ft depot for Carlsberg Britvic at the West Midlands Interchange (WMI).
The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by representatives from Winvic, LCP, Oxford Properties, Carlsberg Britvic and South Staffordshire District Council marked the milestone of works starting for the first occupier at WMI. The new two-storey depot, including 11,408 sq ft of office space, is purpose-built to Carlsberg Britvic’s requirements and will feature state-of-the-art facilities to support the company’s expanding logistics operations. Completion is expected in Spring 2026 following a 37-week construction programme.
Carlsberg Britvic was announced earlier this year as the first occupier at WMI — a transformative national logistics hub at Junction 12 of the M6 near Wolverhampton. The development is being delivered by Oxford Properties and LCP and is set to become the UK’s largest intermodal logistics park upon completion.
Building on its earlier role as design stage delivery partner, Winvic has already delivered key infrastructure at the site since 2023, including new road networks, upgrades to public rights of way, and the reconfiguration of underground energy systems. The team also completed tunnelling beneath the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal using a Tunnel Boring Machine, marking a major milestone in the site’s development. The TBM, named ‘Red Emma’ by industry body CECA Midlands in honour of Black Country political pioneer Emma Sproson, drilled 25 metres at a depth of 10 metres as part of site-wide drainage works.
The new Carlsberg Britvic facility has been designed with a strong focus on sustainability and energy performance. The depot is targeting BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and EPC A+ ratings and aims to achieve Net Zero in Operation, in line with the Net Zero Carbon Building Pilot Standard. It will incorporate high-efficiency heat pumps, rainwater harvesting systems, and ecological design features, while its roofs will be fully optimised for photovoltaic panels.
As part of Winvic's social value commitments, the company has developed an Employment Skills and Training Plan to support local communities. To date, 18 industry placements and five apprenticeships have been facilitated, alongside formal training initiatives in partnership with supply chain partners. Forty-one percent of the project’s workforce currently resides within 30 miles of the site. Winvic has also partnered with local schools to host Careers Lead and Teacher Encounter Days, inspiring young people to explore careers in engineering, planning, and construction.
Danny Nelson, Managing Director of Industrial, Logistics and Distribution at Winvic, said: "During our early contractor involvement and delivery of significant civils and infrastructure works, we have built collaborative relationships with Oxford Properties and LCP, so we are perfectly placed to deliver the first depot at one of the UK's largest and most environmentally conscious intermodal logistics parks.
"Our team brings extensive experience of delivering similar sustainable, rail served sites and by working with our client, supply chain partners and the local authorities, WMI will give local people access to construction skills and employment, bringing significant economic benefit to the region and nationally."
David Bodily, Property & Facilities Director at Carlsberg Britvic, added: "The West Midlands Interchange will play an important role in Carlsberg Britvic’s logistics network, as the home to our West Midlands Depot serving customers throughout the region from Q4 2026. This is a very special moment for the development as work begins, and we are proud to take part and mark the occasion. Our new depot will provide a fantastic long-term hub for our people and reinforces the West Midlands role as a key centre for logistics in the UK, helping to drive growth and excellence."
Robin Everall, Head of Development at Oxford Properties, said: "This groundbreaking ceremony at the West Midlands Interchange is an important milestone in the development of the UK's foremost logistics hub, with its multi-modal transport connectivity and highly sustainable specifications attracting blue chip occupiers looking for bespoke warehouse space. We look forward to working with Carlsberg Britvic on the delivery of their new facility and welcoming them to the site once it’s completed next year."
When fully complete by 2034, West Midlands Interchange will provide more than 8 million sq ft of commercial space across a 734-acre site, supported by a dedicated rail hub enabling multi-modal freight movement across the UK.
