RWE has signed a seven-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Co-op Group, one of the world's largest consumer co-operatives.
Under the agreement, Co-op will source clean electricity generated by RWE’s Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea to help power its UK operations, including food stores, distribution centres, and funeralcare homes. The deal will supply 33 gigawatt hours (GWh) of renewable electricity each year – enough to power around 140 Co-op food stores, equivalent to 12,200 homes.
The partnership supports Co-op's strategy to increase its use of renewable energy and accelerate progress towards its net zero targets, which include reaching net zero across its operations by 2035 and across its entire business by 2040. In March 2024, Co-op became one of the first UK convenience retailers to have its net zero targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The PPA also contributes to the UK's wider energy transition by supporting the decarbonisation of the retail sector and strengthening national energy security through long-term renewable energy procurement.
The Gwynt y Môr wind farm, operated by RWE, is Wales’s largest offshore wind facility. Located off the coast of North Wales, it comprises 160 turbines with a total capacity of 576 megawatts and is owned by a consortium including RWE, Stadtwerke München GmbH, and Macquarie GIG.
