Plymouth Launches Next Phase Of On-Street EV Charging Rollout

Plymouth City Council has officially launched a new partnership with Urban Fox – a joint venture between Balfour Beatty Investments and Urban Electric Networks – to expand low-impact, on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the city.

The initiative builds on a two-and-a-half-year pilot, during which Urban Fox installed 26 dual-socket UEone chargepoints across 10 charging hubs. The scheme provided 53 bays and supported the annual charging needs of up to 650 EV drivers.

The next stage will see the reinstatement of 24 dual-socket chargepoints, creating 48 bays, reinforcing the council's commitment to delivering more near-home charging options for residents, particularly those without access to off-street parking.

A public survey carried out before the rollout highlighted strong local demand for accessible charging:

• 38% of respondents said they were more likely to buy an EV if local charging was readily available.

• 80% said they would not travel more than 250 metres to access a charger.

• 90% supported the expansion of on-street EV charging.

• 80% valued clutter-free streetscapes.

• 67% placed high importance on charging infrastructure that was aesthetically pleasing.

Urban Fox's UEone chargepoints – retractable, kerbside fast chargers that sit flush with the ground when not in use – were chosen to meet these needs. Feedback from the pilot also informed design enhancements, including single-handed operation, socket height adjustment to industry standards, and new features to improve accessibility for disabled motorists and those with additional needs.

The trial was widely welcomed by residents and demonstrated both the feasibility and accessibility of the system. The latest rollout will further expand Plymouth’s EV network, delivering safe, reliable and scalable charging solutions.

Oli Freeling-Wilkinson, CEO of Urban Fox, said: "We are proud to build on the success of our pilot and expand this vital infrastructure in Plymouth. The UEone perfectly combines design, functionality, reliability and accessibility. We’re delighted to partner with the council in accelerating the city’s transition toward cleaner transport."
