Basildon's plans for a new 3,500-seat arena have taken a significant step forward after the Council’s Cabinet approved the creation of a dedicated project team to oversee the scheme through delivery and operator handover.
The decision follows a strong response from the market and positive findings from a recent soft market testing report. Once operational, the Westgate Arena is expected to attract more than 300,000 visitors a year, boost town centre footfall for local businesses, and become the largest indoor event venue in Essex. It will host a wide range of activities including live music, comedy, theatre, conferences, exhibitions, community events, productions and e-gaming.
The Arena is the flagship element of Westgate Phase 2, part of a wider regeneration project designed to transform Basildon into a leading cultural and economic hub for Essex. In May 2024, Basildon Council acquired the 4.8-hectare Westgate Retail Park, securing control of a key town centre site that also includes the Towngate Theatre, the Basildon Centre, Essex County Council Library, Department for Work and Pensions offices, and NHS services.
Phase 1 of the redevelopment, which proposes 97 new homes and a 100-bed hotel, is due to be considered by the Planning Committee next month.
Next steps for the Arena include identifying an investment partner and progressing to a full planning application. The venue is set to become a cornerstone of Basildon’s long-term cultural and economic development.
