£285,000 Awarded To Two Swansea Regeneration Projects

Construction News Image
The Welsh Government has awarded a total of £285,000 to two projects in Swansea through the city’s Regeneration Area Programme. Both projects are led by the City and County of Swansea Council.

£250,000 has been awarded to the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery redevelopment project, while £35,000 of funding has been allocated to fund a detailed implementation plan for the creation of a heritage-led regeneration of the Hafod Copperworks area.

The GlynVivianArtGallery is currently undergoing a £6.7m redevelopment, funded by the Arts Council of Wales, City and County of Swansea Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. This is the second allocation to the project from the Regeneration Area Programme following a previous contribution of £300,000 at an earlier stage.

The project aims to create a space in which the gallery can engage more widely with the community through its proposed art and education programmes. The work includes improving accessibility and environmental performance and reorganising the gallery’s space to make the building more inviting to visitors.

The Hafod CopperWorks project aims to develop a modern, attractive and vibrant riverside urban area, creating a place where people want to live, work and visit, capitalising upon and celebrating the Tawe's unique contribution to the industrial revolution.

Plans include the creation of a destination for new businesses and a mix of uses including hotel and residential uses in an historic environment. The Regeneration Area funding of £35,000 will contribute to the overall cost of £40,000 for a detailed plan that will facilitate further applications for funding from other potential partners.

Housing Regeneration and Heritage Minister Huw Lewis said: "This funding is excellent news for Swansea and a brilliant example of how the Welsh Government, the City and County of Swansea Council and other partners are working together to make the most of what Swansea has to offer. Both the GlynnVivianGallery and the Hafod Copperworks have the potential to become top class attractions in Swansea, and will benefit the local community both by providing leisure and educational opportunities and by creating business and job opportunities."
