Designs for totally new £20 million buildings for Ormiston Bushfield Academy have been approved by Peterborough City Council's planning and environmental protection committee.
Now city council education officials are working with academy governors and staff, Ormiston Education, the Department for Education and Partnerships for Schools to secure final approval for the project to proceed.
Councillor John Holdich, the city council's Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and University, said: "It is fantastic that we now have planning approval for the Ormiston Bushfield Academy. It’s another milestone for this project and we will now move forward towards securing final approval in partnership with the Department for Education, Ormiston Education and Partnerships for Schools.
"We hope that, in line with recent announcements, the Bushfield project may proceed as planned."
Kier is the preferred contractor to design and build the new academy and its plans were unanimously approved by the planning committee. It was hoped that construction of the new academy would begin this autumn with completion expected in summer 2012.
