Builder Reels In Children's Hospital Cash

Lovell has given The Children's Hospital, Sheffield a boost by raising £968 at a charity angling competition.

The company, which has set up an angling club while working in the city on Sheffield Homes' multi-million pound Decent Homes modernisation programme, handed over the proceeds from the event, which took place at Aston Ponds.

The club holds monthly competitions all over south Yorkshire.

Its members include staff from Lovell and its subcontractors, Sheffield Homes and local residents.

The Children's Hospital is part of Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust, which is one of only four dedicated Children's Hospital Trusts in the UK, providing integrated, highly specialist health care for children and young people in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and beyond.

Each year, the Trust cares for around 19,000 inpatients, 94,000 outpatients and almost 50,000 Emergency Department admissions.

"The Hospital does so much excellent work for young people in the region that we wanted to try and use our angling events to support them in some way," explained Chris Guirdham, regional business systems manager for Lovell, which has local offices in Maltravers Road.

"We'd like to thank Alex and Sara Mitchell for giving us the use of the lake at Aston Ponds for the event."

More than 30 anglers did battle for more than five hours at the pond. Catch of the day went to Bill Rooks who landed an 8lb carp.

"We had a great day of fishing and it was fantastic to be able to raise so much for such a worthwhile cause," said Chris. "I'd like particularly like to thank Gary Hogg, one of our subcontractors, Lovell warehouse manager Dan Bryan and warehouse labourer Damien Claxton, who all played a big part in organising the day."

Simon Athey, senior fundraiser at The Children's Hospital Charity, said: "On behalf of all our young patients I want to say a big thank-you to everyone who took part in the competition.

"The money raised will help us support and enhance the work of The Children’s Hospital, helping it to maintain its reputation as a world-class centre of excellence for the research, prevention, care and cure of illness."
