Chessington Decontamination Unit

Naylor Thermachem drainage has been selected to handle the discharge of the chemicals that will be used on site for the cleaning and decontamination processes. During these processes aggressive chemicals such as caustic soda are used at high temperatures to sterilise instruments. Naylor Thermachem will handle the discharge of these chemicals to a storage tank where it can be treated before re-use or safe disposal.
Naylor Thermachem drainage provides excellent corrosion resistance to cleaning chemicals used in cleanroom and decontamination applications. Naylor Thermachem also provides excellent resistance to Thermal Shock ensuring pipes will not suffer from cracking due to thermal shock if constantly subjected to high temperature chemical discharges followed by cold water rinsing. Naylor Thermachem pipes will ensure there are no leaks in the pipeline and ensure any aggressive chemicals used are maintained on site and treated accordingly.
Steris is a company focused on products and services for infection prevention in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors. Operating worldwide in over 100 countries the company provides a range of solutions from supplying capital equipment to consumables. In its new large scale Chessington Decontamination Unit it will provide healthcare services including instrument sterilisation, medical device decontamination and surgical instrument repair for a number of NHS trusts. Naylor Celebrates 130th Anniversary

Barnsley-based building material manufacturer Naylor Industries is celebrating its 130th year.
The company, which was founded as a clay pipe manufacturer by George Wilfred Naylor in 1890, remains in family hands under CEO Edward Naylor, the fourth generation of the family to head up the business.
Naylor was founded in the West Yorkshire village of Denby Dale and retains a Yorkshire focus today, with three of its five factories being in the Barnsley area.
More recently, Naylor has acquired manufacturing sites in Fife and the West Midlands.
While the company still manufactures clay pipes, recent decades have seen the business diversify, launching a range of plastic and concrete products and carrying out a multi-million pound programme of investment in its manufacturing capabilities.
Naylor is an active exporter, having sold its products into 65 international markets.
Although the company primarily supplies the construction industry, its Yorkshire Flowerpots business is now the UK’s largest manufacturer of terracotta garden pots.
Business turnover exceeds £55m and the company employs some 400 people.
Most recently, Naylor has been developing the next generation of the business with an active apprentice programme and a management trainee initiative, involving sponsorship of degree level studies.
Edward Naylor, chief executive, said: “We're very proud of our history as very few businesses make it through to the fourth generation.
“But we're always very keen to look forward as well as back, and our emphasis on innovation and diversification has been key to growing the business.
“We're hoping that this - and the development of apprentices and other young people in the business - provide firm foundations for another 130 years of growth.”
Naylor Acquires Procter Fencing

Naylor Concrete Products has acquired the business and certain assets of concrete fencing manufacturer Procter Fencing for an undisclosed sum.

Procter Fencing is a manufacturer and supplier of concrete fence posts and ancil-lary products. The business has a turnover of £3.3m, is based in Garforth and em-ploys 32 people; Procter director Keith Kirwin will be joining Naylor.

Naylor Chief Executive Edward Naylor said: “We’re looking forward to working with the Procter team to develop their fencing range and capacity and are excited about being able to offer our customers a wider range of concrete products.”

Naylor Concrete Products Ltd is based at Barugh Green, Barnsley and is part of Naylor Industries plc, a fourth-generation family group of manufacturing busi-nesses.

The company has been manufacturing prestressed concrete lintels for over 50 years; its precast activities tanks and retaining walls date back to the acquisition of White’s (Concrete) Ltd in 2016.

The company recently commissioned a new £2m automated lintel manufacturing plant which has improved productivity and increased capacity.

As part of Naylor Lintels £2 million manufacturing improvement project for manufacture of prestressed concrete lintels, they have used their own Whites Concrete modular tanks to create a recycling tank for water from the extrusion process and wash off area.
Four modular tanks were used in sequence. Each having a 10,000 litre capacity giving a total capacity of 40,000 litres. Each tank has a dimension of 2.0m high x 2.4m long x 2.3m wide.
A single modular tank has a holding capacity of 10 cubic metres or 10,000 litres and combined with further elements a tank of 100 cubic metres or 100,000l can be achieved.
Designed for use below ground and suitable for storage of most liquid types. Commonly used to contain leachate and dirty water the tanks are supplied in flat pack form complete with concrete covers which can be solid, slatted or have a manhole opening.
Notice to our customers and suppliers

Given the rather extraordinary times in which we live, we wanted to give you an update from Naylor. As regards the current state of play, it is very much business as usual. All our factories are operating as normal; a very small number of our colleagues are self-isolating (although this is for precautionary reasons and we have no confirmed Coronavirus cases amongst our employee base).

We have heeded the Government’s guidance on social distancing and are trying to spread our employees as widely as possible across our offices and factories; in particular, we are trying to split up groups of people fulfilling similar roles to minimize the risk of losing key business functions.

We are perhaps fortunate that Construction, our main market, is an outdoor activity and hopefully will be less impacted than industries such as hospitality and travel. At the moment, our customers are open, most construction sites seem to be operating normally and order intake is close to budget.

We believe we have robust supply lines covering the main materials, products and services; these should allow us to offer a normal service for the foreseeable future.

We’re conscious that things are changing very quickly but this is as at today’s date, 20 March.

Everards Brewery

Everards brewery and visitor centre in Leicester is part of the Everards Meadow site which provides an outdoor recreations space with opportunities for walking, cycling, and birdwatching.
The facility will include a 200 plus capacity beer hall and distillery to make spirits for it’s own chain of pubs, in addition to Everards traditional brewing facilities which were founded in 1849.
The Naylor Thermachem drainage will provide
resistance to the high temperatures and chemicals discharged during the CIP (Clean In Place) operation at the brewery. Ensuring chemicals used on site are contained and helping to ensure the site look after its natural surroundings.
Naylor worked with WSP Consultant Engineers
during the design phase to ensure the pipes would provide the correct level of chemical resistance and to advise on the most appropriate coupling solution.
Naylor technical staff visited site to train Hannon Brothers ground workers on correct installation techniques.

Naylor Archive Uncovers Historic Document

A recent find in the Cawthorne archives of Naylor Drainage is now proudly residing in a museum.

A Naylor employee with an interest in history came across a St John’s Ambulance document from the 1980s in the Naylor archives; the document carried early guidance for first aiders relating to the AIDS virus. An archives hub search only came up with one similar item, from a different organisation from 1985.

Realising the potential significance of the document, the Order of St John Museum in London was contacted and the Museum curator was delighted to accept the donation of the document into their collection, commenting: “Many thanks to Naylor for donating this historical document to our Museum. This leaflet includes information around transmission which was thought to be true at the time but our advice to first aiders remains the same.”
Naylor Employee Wins Award

Jade Terry, a Sales Manager for Barnsley based Naylor Drainage Ltd, has won a prestigious national award in an annual ceremony of the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF). Naylor Drainage are UK manufacturers of Plastic and Clay pipes; Jade, aged 29 and based at Naylor's Cawthorne site, is the account manager for a number of Naylor's most important accounts.
Jade was awarded the BMF Young Supplier Achiever award in the face of strong UK-wide competition.
Naylor Chief Executive Edward Naylor commented "we're absolutely thrilled for Jade. As a fourth generation family business, we're always trying to be one step ahead and it's great to see the next generation- of which Jade is a leading light- coming through"

Construction products manufacturer Naylor Industries plc held a Wellbeing day on its Cawthorne site, with medical checks and briefings on a variety of health related themes.
The event was visited by local MP Angela Smith. Naylor Chief Executive Edward Naylor commented "we were very grateful to Angela for supporting the event. We're a fourth generation family business with lots of long servers and we're obviously keen to help our employees keep fit and well."
Naylor Join Beach Clean

Members of Barnsley based Naylor Drainage recently met with volunteers from Waves of Waste and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust for a beach clean in Filey.
The two beach cleans started at 11am with a 100 metre audit. Once complete, the volunteers were off- armed with litter pickers and recycled bags.
In total, an impressive 21.75kg of litter was collected within the two hours. Considering most of the waste comprised lightweight items- small pieces of plastic, cigarette butts and foam- 21.75kg adds up to a lot of waste.
The litter picking concluded with some seaside fish and chips - with all containers being disposed of responsibly!

Battlefield EFW Plant, Shrewsbury

Naylor Thermachem pipes have been installed at
Veolia’s Battlefield EFW plant in Shrewsbury. The facility will treat approx. 90,000 tonnes of Shropshire’s waste per year, generating enough electricity to power around 45,000 homes. With recycling schemes already in place landfill for the region will be reduced to just 5%. Thermachem pipes were chosen due to their excellent resistance to thermal shock and will carry boiler blow down water from the boiler to a holding tank, where water will be cooled and treated for re-use or discharge. Different coloured couplings, usually used to distinguish the coupler seal material, where used to identify the two different pipelines carrying different discharges. Clugston

have constructed several EFW plants in the UK,

at Leeds at Wilton plants.

Safety and the Environmental impact very seriously.
Operating from a site in Main Street, Sutton-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire where the head office and service centre are located along with parking for the ever growing fleet of LEZ compliant coaches.
Considering the site has no main drains to the rear of the workshop to manage stormwater runoff with this type of commercial activity Paul Marshall Engineering Director installed an upgraded bunded diesel tank and filling
zone in February 2015 with the Naylor Smart Sponge® Smart Brake Technology and installed the unit in the specially designed sump to capture any Hydrocarbons that may wash off from the buses but more importantly as a failsafe precaution for the bunded diesel fuel tank.
The Naylor Smart Sponge® Smart Brake Absorbs any Hydrocarbons washed into the sump from rainfall events and solidifies the liquid into a solid manageable waste , however the Smart Brake has a more challenging aspect in that should a volume of Hydrocarbons enter the system the unique Smart Sponge® Technology inside the Smart Brake unit Absorbs the Hydrocarbon and seals the outlet pipe within minutes of the incident happening therefore
stopping any contamination from leaving the site and allowing a safe clean up at source.
In February 2016 after successfully completing the purchase of the old redundant Poplar Farm storage facility, Paul Marshall set about turning a section of the building into the vehicle wash area with a portable bus wash
unit, this meant creating a channel drainage run inside the building to capture any silts and sediments washing off the fleet and filtered via the Naylor Enviroflow Technology prior to the liquor washing through into the 2 Naylor Smart Sponge® Smart Filter units installed in the outside control chamber for
final clean and polish.
The 2 Naylor Smart Sponge® Smart Filters are installed for easy access and maintenance and allow Paul Marshall a monitoring aid as well as stopping any Hydrocarbons from leaving the site.
Paul commented that with the benefits of the Naylor Smart Sponge® Technologies this has allowed the company to enhance its sites with smaller compact systems capable of achieving 95% Hydrocarbon Absorption as an average and allowing a user friendly solution to what is normally an industrial problem and will continue to use this system.
Barry Marshall from Naylor Environmental was helpful and knowledgeable when it came to installing the Smart Sponge and Enviroflow system to make sure it did exactly what we required of the system.
Naylor Smart Sponge® aids environmental protection as station reopens

Snodland Railway Station now on the Southeastern rail network in Kent, UK operated a full service from June 1856 and continued until it stopped selling train tickets in 1986. The station building has since been used as a takeaway outlet and taxi office the nearby signal box is now a listed building.
In 2007 a PERTIS (Permit to Travel) ticket machine was installed at the station, just outside the entrance to the northbound platform. More recently, Southeastern undertook a £1.1 million refurbishment of Snodland station, which is also a listed building, to create a 'transport interchange' and extended car park which will see the ticket office reopen for the first time since 1986. Since the introduction of high speed services from Maidstone to London via Snodland five years ago, passenger numbers have increased by around 30%.
Outside the station Southeastern is creating better access for buses, cyclists and
pedestrians and extending the car park. CCTV system and security lighting will also improve passenger safety. Information screens giving real-time details on train services, seating, step-free access to the ticket office and a toilet will also improve the passenger experience. David Statham, Managing Director at Southeastern, said: “Since the introduction of high speed services the number of passengers using Snodland station has grown significantly. We wanted to give them a better station, with better access and facilities, to make their journeys easier.” Work was completed by August 2016 having been jointly funded by the Department for Transport (DfT) with £600,000 from its National Station Improvement Programme (NSIP), Kent County Council with £485,000 from its Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF) and the Railway Heritage Trust (£32,000). Other partners include Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, Kent Community Rail Partnership and Network Rail, with which Southeastern is working to improve facilities at stations on the network.
Environmental Protection
Given the expected increase in traffic and the potential contaminated run-off this might
create, Naylor Environmental's Smart Sponge® Smart Gully Adaptors were installed in the
road gullies to protect the roadside soakaway from harmful hydrocarbon pollution from the
car park, so preventing it entering the existing green space surrounding the station as part of the Water Framework Directive.
Naylor Smart Sponge® absorbs any hydrocarbons that would normally pass directly into the soakaway and solidifies the liquid hydrocarbons into a safe manageable recyclable
solid waste, whilst allowing stormwater to pass directly into the soakaway as a clean
natural resource.
Smart Gully
The Naylor Environmental Smart Gully range utilises the unique properties of Naylor's
Smart Sponge® to filter out hydrocarbons at street level before discharge into the sewers
or the surrounding environment via soakaways. Available as a Smart Gully Adapter (SGA) the units have been designed for both concrete and plastic street gullies and attach within the rodding eye thus not interfering with flow or maintenance procedures. The SGA's can be supplied as a retrofit unit.
Chris Lamb, Project Manager with WSS Construction Consultants said: “We needed to
protect the existing fauna and flora surrounding the station and the Naylor Smart Sponge® Technology is the perfect solution for achieving the Water Framework Directive with a very simple installation in the road gullies therefore utilising the new infrastructure as part of the treatment requirements and negating the need of installing and maintaining oil separator tanks.”

Edward Naylor Wins National Award

A local businessman has been named a British manufacturing champion after scooping a prestigious national business award at the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards held in London last week.

Edward Naylor, CEO at Barnsley-based manufacturer Naylor Industries, took gold in the Leadership Award, sponsored by Liberty House Group, which celebrates the achievements of outstanding manufacturing leaders and the significant contribution they make to their business and to UK manufacturing.

Edward, who has worked in manufacturing since 1993, was selected by a panel of judges drawn from business leaders, industry experts and academics. He was up against tough competition from other outstanding leaders from a range of dynamic businesses, small and large, from across the UK.

Judges were impressed with the way Edward restructured the family business to look to the future by leading from the front.

Naylor Industries is a manufacturer of construction materials- primarily clay and plastic pipes.

HRH the Duke of Kent has formally opened a new factory extension for Naylor Industries.

The £5m investment will allow the construction products company to make larger diameter pipes to carry big volumes of surface water, helping protect Britain against flooding from extreme weather.

The family-owned company has installed a high-tech production line to manufacture large diameter plastic drainage pipes for its customers in the infrastructure, agriculture and utilities markets.

The previous major development took place in 2008, when the company completed a £4m investment in Cawthorne production facilities to manufacture 600mm diameter pipe, helping the company to accelerate out of the last recession.

The new project will manufacture double-walled pipes which are larger still - 750mm, 900mm and 1050mm diameter.

The Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership provided a £615,000 grant to support the project.

While the main plant was purchased from its German machinery supplier, around a dozen local suppliers were engaged in the factory extension project and enabling works.

The project creates 20 new jobs on the Cawthorne site, including a number of highly skilled engineering roles and a team of Naylor employees was sent to Germany for training with the new equipment.
Founded in 1890, Naylor originally manufactured clay brick and pipes but expanded into plastic in 2000.

Edward Naylor took over as chief executive in 1993 when Naylor was loss-making and had sales of £12m.

Naylor’s turnover broke through the £50m barrier for the first time this year. Naylor today employs 400 people at six sites across the UK.

It also has a successful consumer business, Yorkshire Flowerpots, which are guaranteed frost-proof.

Every year, the Naylor group manufactures enough pipe to stretch around the world, twice.

The new investment dramatically increases the capacity of the company’s Cawthorne site, which already manufactures up to 50 miles of pipe per day.

Naylor - which holds the prestigious Gold Investor in People Standard - invests heavily in its people, hiring a dozen apprentices a year to train the next generation of engineers, technicians and craftspeople.

It runs two-week summer camps for local school children to learn about career opportunities in British manufacturing, including engineering, technical and craft roles.

The Duke of Kent, who is the Queen’s cousin, toured the factory with Edward Naylor and met with staff members and apprentices.

Mr Naylor said: “Queen Victoria was on the throne when my great-grandfather founded Naylor Industries.

“It was an honour to show the Duke of Kent around our facilities.”

The quality control procedures of Yorkshire based Naylor Drainage Ltd are well-established and much of the company's certification is covered by a kitemark awarded by the British Standards Institute (BSI).
Every 10 years, the BSI grants companies a long tenure award on the anniversary of their first being granted a kitemark. At a ceremony which took place during the recent Ecobuild exhibition at London's Excel, Naylor were presented with 10 year awards for two plastic certifications including BS4962 for Plastic field drainage and 20 year awards for their ISO9001 Quality Management System and their Band Seal and EN295 Vitrified Clay Pipe certifications.

John Lockwood, an employee of Barnsley based Naylor Drainage retired at Christmas after clocking up a remarkable 60 years' service.

Lockwood was born in 1941- just 9 days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. He joined Naylor in December 1956, aged 15, working at Naylor's former fittings plant at Denby Dale before moving to the Cawthorne works when the two sites were amalgamated in 1993. He has held a variety of roles right across Naylor's Clay Drainage business, latterly working in mould manufacture and in quality control.

To celebrate his retirement, the Naylor Board held a reception at Cawthorne at which three generations of his family were present including his wife Margaret; he was presented with a special medal to recognise his 60 years' service. Naylor Chief Executive Edward Naylor commented "I feel truly humbled by John's amazing achievement- he has been working for Naylor for 6 years longer than I have been alive! He has been a model employee and we are immensely grateful for his hard work over 6 decades".
Naylor Directors in London’s Lord Mayor's Show

As a supplier to the builders’ merchant industry, Barnsley based clay and plastic pipe manufacturer Naylor Drainage has close links with City Livery Company, the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants. This year’s Lord Mayor’s show was held on Saturday 12 November, and included a float from the Livery Company which was sponsored by Naylor.

The Show celebrates the inauguration of a new Lord Mayor and is one of the best-known and longest established annual events in London, dating back to the 16th century. Some 150 floats took part in the two mile procession through the City, with crowds of people lining the City's streets and cheering the long fleet of vehicles, marching bands, spectacular floats, carriages and much more; the whole event was captured live on the BBC

The Livery Company's float had the theme of ‘Builders’ Merchants: Supplying Britain’s Building Needs’ – demonstrating the importance of builders’ merchanting to the UK economy as well as highlighting the many career opportunities for young people. As a result of the company's sponsorship, Naylor Chief Executive Edward Naylor and COO Bridie Warner-Adsetts walked the route of the parade alongside the Livery Company's float- sporting colourful outfits which featured the company's products.

Bellway Homes Oxlease Project in with Mackoy Groundworks and Civil Engineering Ltd

Bellway Homes wanted to build new houses on a plot of land at Oxlease Farm in Romsey which bordered a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) canal and needed stringent measures to meet the Environment Agencies requirements even before site works commenced.
Harry Long, Engineering Manager for Bellway Homes Wessex region sourced the Naylor Environmental Smart Sponge® Technology and instantly realised that a simple standard solution was available which would treat all the site runoff through both the Smart Sponge® and Enviroflow® Technologies.
Mike Mayock MD of Mackoy Ltd said “During the initial set up stage we investigated several options however none complied and this led to onsite meetings with Naylor Environmental who
offered us solutions with various aspects of products for the site. The Naylor Aquavoid®
attenuation system and the Naylor Enviroflow Technology for filtering contaminated sediment
were immediately sourced as perfect solutions engineered to enhance the Smart Sponge® Filter
Chamber unit and agreed with Harry Long”
The Smart Filter Chamber units were positioned to capture all of the water runoff from the site
passing through the Enviroflow® to filter out the majority of the fines and then through the Smart
Filter Chamber which houses the Smart Sponge® Technology, this absorbs any hydrocarbons in the water and solidifies it into a safe manageable recyclable solid waste, whilst allowing stormwater to pass directly into the canal as a clean natural resource.
As a further pollution prevention measure Bellway Homes is installing Smart Sponge® Gully Adaptors into every road gully at the end of the contract to further protect the canal and drainage from pollution therefore committing to the Water Framework Directive and achieving three layers of treatment.
Naylor Environmental also provided their Aquavoid®-Traffic crate system for the attenuation storage requirement which enables a protected silt and inspection tunnel to be created through the structure to capture and retain the silt within the route allowing simple inspection and maintenance.
This is the first of many Bellway Homes projects that will have the Smart Sponge® and Enviroflow® Technologies installed at pre-construction phase to protect the local surrounding habitat therefore encouraging biodiversity before and during construction. This is a major consideration for Bellway Homes in their strategy of reducing the disruption to local species and wild meadows and is a first of its kind in consideration for fauna and flora.

Naylor Plastic Appoints Sales Director

The Plastic Pipe division of Yorkshire based Naylor Drainage has appointed Mark Rowden as Sales Director.

Mark has considerable industry experience having worked for manufacturers of Plastic Pipe and duct box systems for some 25 years.

Naylor Divisional MD Rob Hughes commented "our plastic ducting and drainage businesses have grown considerably over recent years. We will be launching larger diameter drainage- up to 1050mm- in the new year and Mark's expertise will have an important role to play in this and our other expansion plans"

A Sealwall Tank manufactured by Whites Concrete has become part of Rampton Hospital’s new Energy Centre in Nottinghamshire, U.K., which is operated and maintained under a Carbon Energy Fund framework contract.
Part of the new Energy Centre that provides heating, hot water and electricity to the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust Hospital, Whites Concrete’s pre-cast concrete Sealwall Tank is a component of Rampton’s new effluent treatment plant—now a modern, automated system that meets both current environmental standards and future expansion of the site.
Designed to ensure a watertight and robust connection between adjacent panels, the Sealwall is cast in segments with a jointing system. Units undergo quality control during manufacture and also reduce build-time by up to 50%.
The hospital’s existing coal-fired boilers at have been replaced with a 1 MW biomass boiler, a 1.2 MW combined heat and power (CHP) engine and three high-efficiency dual-fuel boilers running predominantly on gas. A new building management system also has been installed.
Under its framework contract, guaranteed specified carbon and energy savings are set to deliver projected financial savings of around £112,000 pa for the Trust. The new plant meets all of the hospital’s heating and hot water requirements and approximately 87% of the total electricity demand, reducing CO2 emissions by around 8,000 tonnes pa.
Naylor SHEE Day

Every two years, construction materials manufacturer Naylor Industries holds a Safety, Health, Energy and Environment (SHEE) Day, with training sessions on topics as diverse as manual handling and fire prevention and aimed at spreading best practice across the Naylor group.

The 2016 SHEE Day was held at Naylor’s new site at Wombwell, with enthusiastic participation from all attendees including representatives from each of Naylor’s 6 manufacturing sites.

Naylor support London’s Lord Mayor Show float

As a supplier to the builders’ merchant industry, clay and plastic pipe maker Naylor Drainage has close links with City Livery Company, the Worshipful Company of Builders’ Merchants. The Livery Company last included a float in London’s Lord Mayor’s show in 2013; this was supported by Naylor and featured Builders’ Merchanting through the ages, starting with a hand-cart and ending with a flat-bed lorry. It grabbed the attention of BBC broadcasters and featured prominently on TV.

This year’s Lord Mayor’s show will be held on Saturday 12 November, and once again the Livery Company is organising a float. This year, the theme is ‘Builders’ Merchants: Supplying Britain’s Building Needs’ – demonstrating the importance of builders’ merchanting to the UK economy. The float will also highlight the many career opportunities for young people. CEO Edward Naylor and COO Bridie Warner-Adsetts will be Naylor’s representatives on the float.

The Show is one of the best-known annual events in London as well as one of the longest-established, dating back to the 16th century. Over 150 floats take part each year in a two mile procession through the City to celebrate the inauguration of a new Lord Mayor.

Crowds of people line the City's streets to celebrate the occasion and cheer the long fleet of vehicles, marching bands, spectacular floats, carriages and much more. The Show represents charities, community groups, business and Livery companies as well as Her Majesty’s Forces and the City Police. The whole event is captured live on the BBC.

Naylor Industries plc, a Barnsley based manufacturer of construction products, this week pledged its commitment to a new venture to help Barnsley's youth become better learners and better workers of the future.

The "Made In" Ambassador programme is the brainchild of The Company of Cutlers Education Programme and began its life in Sheffield, successfully developing over 400 children to become Ambassadors for the city. Young people are selected by interview to take a coveted place and over a two to three year period, receive mentoring, work skills, careers advice and work experience opportunities. Successful Ambassadors receive an accolade that is recognised by future employers - singling them out as having great potential and readiness for the world of work.

On the back of this success, the programme is being expanded to include Made in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.

Around 50 Year 9 students across 5 schools in Barnsley are taking part in this first round. Naylor Industries plc, Henry Boot Construction, Pressure Technologies plc, Barnsley Health Care Federation and the Work-Wise Foundation are already signed up to help the Company of Cutlers deliver high quality work experience and support over the next two years or so in the fields of manufacturing, engineering and health care. These fields of work were chosen to reflect the growing career opportunities in our community. The participants will get a taster of all these work environments to enable them to make informed decisions about potential future careers and to dismiss any preconceived ideas they may have about the variety of opportunities available.
Official Opening of New Naylor Head Office

Construction material manufacturer Naylor have moved to a new head office at Wombwell?, near Barnsley.

The building was formerly a distribution warehouse for electronic retailer Maplin which was modernised and modified during an extensive 18 month refurbishment programme.

The opening ceremony was held on Thursday 22 September, with the Mayor of Barnsley, Councillor L?inda Burgess cutting the ribbon.

Naylor Golf Day Raises Charity Funds

Barnsley based pipe and concrete product manufacturer Naylor held a successful golf day which raised £2700 for construction industry charity, The Lighthouse Club, which supports construction employees encountering difficult times. The event, which was held at Wortley Golf Club near Sheffield, was supported by a number of Naylor’s key suppliers.

The Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe, represents Her Majesty the Queen in South Yorkshire and, on Her behalf, takes an interest in the business, industrial and social life of his county."

On 24 June, the Lord-Lieutenant visited the Cawthorne manufacturing facilities of Naylor Drainage, and was able to see at first hand Naylor's extensive Clay and Plastic pipe manufacturing facilities and meet many of Naylor's 380 employees.

Naylor's Yorkshire Flowerpot Company is the UK's largest manufacturer of terracotta garden pots, and the Lord-Lieutenant was presented with two specially engraved pots as a memento of his visit.
Naylor Acquire Whites Concrete

With effect from Monday 2 May 2016, Barnsley based Naylor Concrete Products Ltd has acquired the Whites Concrete business of flooring manufacturer Longley Concrete Ltd.
Naylor Concrete Products Ltd manufactures a wide range of pre-stressed concrete lintels and other precast products, including the widely specified Hi-Spec lintel range. The company had an eventful 2015, celebrating its 50th anniversary as well as moving premises from Ossett to a substantial 9-acre freehold site at Barugh Green, Barnsley.
Whites Concrete is a £2m turnover manufacturer of pre-stressed & pre-cast concrete panels, retaining walls and tanks. The business is currently based on the Longley site in Dewsbury. As part of the transaction, Naylor will move the business to its Barugh Green site, freeing up space at Dewsbury for Longley’s planned expansion of its flooring business. The Whites Concrete commercial team will be relocating to Barugh Green and joining Naylor. Longley Director Michael Wright will be assisting Naylor with the transition on a consultancy basis.

Naylor Salvage Stranded Tykes

The employees of Barnsley based Naylor Industries were unsurprisingly excited to find their local football team Barnsley FC playing at Wembley twice in two months, and both times, the company laid on free travel and pre-match refreshment at a hotel near the stadium.

Due to the high demand for coaches in the Barnsley area, the Naylor coach for the Play-Off Final was a size bigger than the company had tried to book.

Just as well really, as in stopping at Leicester Forest services, the Naylor group bumped into a group of 35 marooned Barnsley fans whose coach had broken down.

Naylor Marketing Manager Liz Hudston managed to squeeze all 35 on and all arrived comfortably in time for kick-off.

A major development project at Newcastle Racecourse recently completed after 6 months' work by Cumbria based contractor Stobart Rail.

The project started in September 2015 and constituted an £11m upgrade including installation of an all-weather Tapeta surface. The project followed a lengthy consultation period and subsequent approval by the British Horseracing Authority. The racecourse owners, Arena Racing Company anticipate considerable benefit from the scheme, which will allow future meetings to go ahead which might otherwise have been cancelled due to wet weather.

Around 30,000 metres of pipe were supplied – primarily Naylor Metrodrain Twin Wall Drainage in sizes up to 600mm.
Dan's Quartet of Qualifications

Dan Wain, Group Health and Safety Advisor of £5m building products manufacturer Naylor Industries plc has just attained the extraordinary achievement of four health and safety qualifications in quick succession.

In addition to obtaining the prestigious NEBOSH certification, Dan obtained additional qualifications in the areas of Management of Health and Safety, Control of Workplace Hazards and Health and Safety practical application. The certificates were presented to Dan by Naylor’s Board of Directors on 20 April.

White Concrete supply pre-cast concrete chamber for 11 tonne Archimedean screw turbine

Whites Concrete has supplied a pre-cast concrete chamber for an 11-tonne Archimedean screw turbine installed on the banks of the River Esk in Whitby, North Yorkshire by national engineering and construction company JN Bentley.
The Whites Concrete chamber has been constructed using robust Groundwall L-shaped units, to house the 2.9m diameter screw turbine. The latter will operate with up to 4 cumec with a rated capacity of 51.6KW as it generates electricity for Esk Energy (Yorkshire), an industrial provident society set up and managed by local residents. Esk Energy secured funding towards the cost of the project through a community share issue along with the necessary planning and license permissions.
As principal contractor, JN Bentley was responsible for the design of the scheme, which has also included the refurbishment of the existing Environment Agency fish pass and its conversion to a Larinier-type fish pass to help increase the River Esk’s salmon and sea trout stocks.
The River Esk can send up to 4 tonnes of water down the Archimedean screw every second – forcing it to rotate whilst a generator extracts the energy made by the turning of the screw, converting it into electricity.

The European Business Awards – now in their ninth year – were created to celebrate and promote business success throughout Europe; 2015/16’s awards have covered 32,000 companies from 33 countries.

Edward Naylor, Naylor Industries Chief Executive Officer and Bridie Warner-Adsetts, Naylor Industries Chief Operating Officer will now undertake a face-to-face interview with the judges in the hope that the company will be named as overall European category winner at the Gala Ceremony which will be held in Milan in June.
