Rockwool Releases Brochure Aimed At Helping Developers To Meet Sustainable Building Codes And Assessments

Construction News Image
Rockwool, the world's leading manufacturer of non-combustible stone wool, has produced a guide on how Rockwool can help provide sustainable insulation solutions and systems for the whole building envelope.

The guide, available through Rockwool's website, www.rockwool.co.uk is aimed at improving awareness and understanding of Rockwool's energy saving products amongst architects, specifiers and builders.

"Sustainable at Source" offers a guide for developers through the building codes and assessments, including the Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM and the BRE Green Guide and how Rockwool products can help them meet them. The use of Rockwool insulation can help developers with a 4 in 1 solution to the codes through acoustic performance, a reduction in CO2 emissions, material specification and construction site waste management.

However, its not just energy saving products that boost Rockwool's sustainability credentials, their entire business model is shaped towards a sustainable future. The guide highlights Rockwool's commitment to 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle'. Rockwool has set ambitious targets to reduce the use of virgin raw material and minimise waste. They recently opened a £7 million recycling plant to expand their capacity to recycle stone wool. Rockwool is 97% recyclable, and can be recycled into new stone wool at their UK factory.

The guide also highlights Rockwool's commitment to local community projects near its South Wales factory. The woodland surrounding Rockwool’s factory is often visited by local school children through the ‘The Rockwool Woodland for Learning Trust’, where they spend time on outdoor nature projects, aiding and nurturing their education. Rockwool also showed its commitment to the local area by giving away FREE insulation to South Wales homes in June/July 2009 – enough to insulate over 3000 homes. The scheme aimed to save local households annual bills of £615,000 thanks to the increased energy efficiency the insulation offers.

At the centre of Rockwool's corporate responsibility ethos is its largest shareholder, The Rockwool Foundation', www.rockwoolfonden.dk/, a not-for-profit organisation with the objective of supporting scientific, humanitarian, artistic or social goals and contributing to the improvement of the environment and the general development of society.

Hans Schreuder, Managing Director at Rockwool Ltd said: "I am very proud of Rockwool's history of manufacturing energy efficient products, solutions and systems.. However, as our earth’s resources deplete, and our need for sustainable building solutions increases, it is important to not be complacent. Rockwool will continue to support the move for improved energy efficiency in all areas of the UK."
