Wakefield Council Signs Minimum Standards Charter For Construction

Wakefield Council has committed its support towards the UK construction industry by signing a Minimum Standards Charter.

Council Leader Peter Box signed the charter alongside members of unions Unite, UCATT and GMB yesterday, 09 March.

The deal pledges that a set of minimum standards are adhered to in all construction projects the local authority is involved in and that workers receive the minimum employment conditions.

The code is also designed to stamp out initiatives such as self-employment schemes, umbrella companies and other unacceptable types of employment.

Cllr Peter Box said by signing the charter, the council is ensuring workers are properly paid and can "enjoy basic employment rights".

"As part of our regeneration plans for the district we are involved in many huge construction projects," he said.

"We need to make sure that the companies working on these projects use a skilled workforce and that the finished products are of a high standard.

"Construction work is dangerous and the health and safety of workers is important"

Chris Weldon, Regional Officer at Unite, added: "I'm happy to sign the charter as it supports our members' right to be paid under the industry collective agreements and recognises the importance of local jobs and training."
