Minister Announces £12.3m To Improve Middlesbrough Transport

Improvements to North Middlesbrough's transport infrastructure have been given the go-ahead with over £12 million of Government funding, Transport Minister Rosie Winterton announced today.

The North Middlesbrough Accessibility scheme comprises a number of improvements within the area including a new link road with pedestrian and cycle facilities between Newport and Riverside Park Road; widening of the existing A66 westbound and eastbound carriageways between Newport and the A19 interchanges; and the widening of the circulatory carriageway at Newport roundabout with increased traffic signal control.

The Minister said: "We are committed to investing in local transport. These improvements to North Middlesbrough will not only enhance accessibility by helping to reduce peak hour congestion at existing points to the A66 but will also improve links from north to south and east to west. In addition, the scheme will assist in opening up a number of regeneration opportunities within the area.

"The scheme will also offer a considerable improvement in conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as improving road safety for all."

The Department for Transport will provide £12.3m, with Middlesbrough Council and other key stakeholders meeting the remainder of the total £13.5m cost.

Construction is due to commence in the next couple of months with the improvements to be completed by the end of 2009.
