The National Housing Federation, Shelter and the Chartered Institute of Housing are to publish a report to measure and assess the Government's progress in meeting commitments on housing policy.
The Government has set out its objectives for housing policy – from providing more homes to protecting the vulnerable and helping the homeless. Now it will be held to account to ensure it keeps its promises.
In a report to be published this autumn, the National Housing Federation, Shelter and the Chartered Institute of Housing will set out ministers' commitments across a range of areas, before measuring and assessing the Government's progress in meeting them.
The group anticipates that The Housing Report will become a regular publication, providing an essential resource featuring the latest statistical data across a range of indicators, to inform and shape the debate around the future of housing in Britain.
David Orr, Chief Executive of the National Housing Federation (NHF), which represents housing associations in England, said: "This initiative is not about bashing ministers for not doing what we ask. It is an opportunity to consider and evaluate, over a period of time, the success of their policy solutions.
"We hope the resulting report will succeed where separate pieces of work on separate Government policies might not – in bringing together the evidence, distilling the data and providing an authoritative sector-wide judgement.
"With the most significant changes to housing policy for decades in the pipeline, against a backdrop of huge cuts to support for some of the most vulnerable people in the country, the need to shine a spotlight on the Government’s record has never been more important. We plan to do just that."
