Lighthouse Safety offers CITB-accredited Temporary Works Training Coordinator and Supervisor available at our facilities in Kent, London, or through live online sessions, ensuring flexible access to quality training.
What Are Temporary Works and Why Do They Matter?
Temporary works are engineered, non-permanent structures like formwork, scaffolding, falsework, excavation supports, and hoardings that facilitate construction. Their failure poses significant risks, including injury, financial loss, and project delays.
The 1972 Loddon Bridge falsework collapse, which claimed lives and sparked the Bragg Report, ultimately led to the establishment of BS 5975 and the formalisation of roles like the Temporary Works Coordinator.
The current standard, BS 5975-1 & 2:2024, defines the procedures and responsibilities for safe temporary works management.
CITB Site Safety Plus – Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC)
The CITB Temporary Works Coordinator course is a comprehensive two-day (approx. 15-hour) programme. It prepares professionals to manage temporary works effectively using the “4 Cs” (Communication, Co-operation, Coordination, Competence) and in compliance with BS 5975 procedures.
Learning modules include:
Definitions and examples of temporary works, and consequences of failure
Legal frameworks: HASWA and CDM regulations
Appointment of roles and stakeholder responsibilities
Planning process: design briefs, registers, permits
Construction oversight, safe dismantling, and record-keeping
The course culminates in a 30-minute open-book exam (25 multiple-choice questions, 72% pass mark)
On successful completion, you receive a 5-year CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, with available refreshers prior to expiry.
Learn more about the Coordinator course.
CITB Site Safety Plus – Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS)
The CITB Temporary Works Supervisor course is a focused one-day training designed for professionals who oversee the day-to-day implementation of temporary works under the coordination of a TWC.
Training covers:
Roles and key responsibilities of a TWS
Applying the 4 Cs within supervision
Understanding and referencing BS 5975 requirements
Inspection, permits, and safe striking procedures
This course also concludes with an assessment and issues a 5-year CITB Site Safety Plus certificate.
Learn more about the Supervisor course.
Delivery by Lighthouse Safety: Flexible and Expert
Kent Facility: Full classroom experience with practical exercises and materials.
London Facility: Easy-access city-based location, ideal for professionals.
Live Online: Synchronous virtual delivery, offering flexibility without compromise on quality.
All formats include CITB-accredited materials, delegate packs, form templates (design brief, register, permits), and expert trainers with hands-on construction experience.
Who Should Attend?
Coordinator course: Ideal for professionals with overall interim works responsibility—site managers, engineers, or nominated TWCs.
Supervisor course: Best suited for foremen, site engineers, or supervisors tasked with daily oversight of temporary works schemes.
FAQ – CITB Temporary Works Training
How long are each of the courses?
The Coordinator course spans two full days (~15 hours), and the Supervisor course is a one-day (~7.5 hours) programme.
What certificate do I receive?
Graduates get a CITB Site Safety Plus card valid for five years. Refreshers are available to revalidate your credential.
Why is this training important?
Temporary works failures can cause fatalities and serious damage. Training ensures safe planning, execution, and dismantling, aligning with both legal and industry standards.
Can I get CITB grant funding?
