Essential Pre-Construction Advice
For developers, early identification is critical. We strongly recommend surveying for invasive plants or land contaminants such as non-licensable asbestos in soils before site clearance, demolition, groundworks begin. Locating and isolating infestations at this stage provides more remediation options, reduces cost exposure, prevents programme delays and ensures full compliance with UK legislation.

I worked closely with the JK Ltd Excavation team on a recent scheme and felt incredibly supported all the way through the process. The works did hit upon some unforseen, unavoidable issues and thanks to their expertise and openness we were able to review and evaluate all the options to give the client as much certainty as we could at that time. I have found all the team to be helpful and responsive, and would definitely recommend them for future works. Thank you!

JKL was tasked to remove two areas of Japanese knotweed at two separate sites to allow BBV to install a bell mouth. The area required veg clearance of an area 2691m2 and Japanese Knotweed removal of an area 680m2. The sites where quite complex due to buried services so Vacuum excavation was recommended to be used by JKL. Once the works started JKL worked extremely close with us and kept regular contact with our site team and office so we all had a picture of what was happening on site so we were able to closely watch our program of works. Needless to say, JKL delivered the works safely and ahead of original program I feel this is down to their organisational skills and problem solving.

News
Japanese knotweed is widely known to have a high environmental impact, outcompeting our native vegetation, threatening biodiversity and limiting amenity space but the real cost of knotweed is felt by the construction industry with its ability to put your project on immediate hold.
Specialists in knotweed eradication Japanese Knotweed Ltd says: “There is a reason we say ‘KNOTWEED IS NOT TO BE IGNORED!‘ Aside from the worry of eradication costs and the commercial burden it puts on businesses up and down the UK, knotweed also has a high environmental impact, and ignoring it has a distinct knock-on effect for the end consumer – purchasing new builds from developments that didn’t deal with knotweed up front.”
The real cost of ignoring knotweed
Knotweed can remain dormant underground for up to 20 years, re-sprouting whenever conditions are favourable. Even minor soil disturbance can trigger new outbreaks. Many legal cases have concluded with significant legal fees and fines for the developer who didn’t deal with it at planning stage – not to mention the cost to remove it by the new property owners.
We get called out to many a development after handover to treat or remove knotweed emerging through newly laid driveways and patios. This is the real cost of ignoring knotweed.
Dealing with knotweed underground
Knotweed roots are capable of growing through even dense clay, and when this happens around infrastructure such as pipes and cables or trees the problem of removal becomes a bigger challenge. Often knotweed will have caused damage to the infrastructure, as it grows through pipes it weakens the structure causing cracks that eventually leads to breakage.
Rhizome growth around tree roots can cause restriction which weakens the tree’s stability. Projects that involve dealing with these challenges can require specialist equipment such as Air Spade or Vacuum Extraction to minimise risk of further damage and protect the environment during works.
The vacuum extraction method is used when we need to work around infrastructure or natural habitats. Using less equipment and vehicles on site also reduces our carbon footprint. Being able to work around trees and live utilities without risk of harm or strike makes it a safer and more sustainable option that is kinder to the environment.
Limiting impact and protecting your investment
So what can we do to limit the construction hazard and project risk that is Japanese knotweed? The best option is prevention. Ensure knotweed cannot take hold, or worse, take over! Getting a survey carried out will arm you with the right information – if you have knotweed you’ll be given options to treat or remove it, and if you haven’t it’ll be the news you wanted to hear.
The best time to have a survey carried out at pre-planning stage, and it can be done now – whilst it’s still visible and before it gets going in spring.

Why Industry Accreditations Matter: A Guide to Their Importance
In today’s fast-paced and highly competitive professional landscape, industry accreditations have become more than just a badge of honour – they are a necessity.
As a business with established credibility, industry accreditations play a crucial role in setting Japanese Knotweed Ltd (JKL) apart from the competition. But why do they matter so much? Let’s explore the key reasons why our industry accreditations are vital in today’s professional world.
Establishing Credibility and Trust
One of the primary benefits of industry accreditations is that they help establish credibility. Certifications and accreditations are typically awarded by recognised professional bodies or organisations, ensuring that individuals or businesses meet specific standards of quality, knowledge, and expertise.
Demonstrating Expertise and Competency
Accreditations serve as proof that our company has undergone rigorous training, assessments, and examinations to meet industry standards. This is especially important for the INNS control and asbestos removal sectors. Holding required and key accreditations demonstrates to clients that our teams possess the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their roles at a high level.
Ensuring Compliance with Industry Standards
Many industries have strict regulatory and compliance requirements. Holding relevant accreditations reassures our clients that we adhere to industry standards, laws, and best practices. This is vital for the weed control business where strict regulations exist around chemical usage and storage, and where heavy plant machinery is operated.
Boosting Customer Confidence

We know that customers and clients want to work with contractors that demonstrate reliability, expertise, and adherence to industry standards. Accreditation ensures we provide high-quality services – consistently.
Encouraging Continuous Professional Development
Many industry accreditations require ongoing education, training, or periodic recertification to stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices. Continuous learning not only benefits individuals but also contributes to the overall advancement of the industry.
Final Thoughts
In an era where trust, expertise, and compliance are paramount, industry accreditations provide a structured way to validate skills and credibility and we know that investing in relevant industry accreditations is a strategic move that our clients benefit from – and look for.
