About EH Smith Porotherm
Porotherm is a precision engineered modern clay block walling system with reassuringly traditional values. It is revolutionising the UK construction industry through exceptionally fast, virtually dry construction combined with high strength and thermal efficiency.
The Porotherm System
Follow the new trend in the UK building industry! The entire process of building with Porotherm clay blocks means areas of wall can be constructed very quickly. Laid by hand, the Porotherm walling system is precise, simple and fast.
By using each specially designed component in series, larger areas are built in a given time dramatically outperforming traditional methods of wall construction. Even though assembly methods are extremely easy to understand, EH Smith are able to offer full training to masonry contractors in order to increase efficiency further.
Porotherm Benefits & Why
Building with Porotherm clay blocks makes it possible to plan, build and live according to environmental and long-term economic principles. Porotherm is an efficient alternative to other building materials such as timber, concrete or light steel frames and is suitable for a variety of construction applications such as Inner leaves and rendered outer leaves of cavity walls, Monolithic (single leaf) external walls, Infill panels within framed structures and Load bearing and non load bearing partition walls.
Overall, the selection of a wall material will only have a minor influence on the overall building cost; however it is integral to the quality of your finished project. With Porotherm blocks, you are choosing a construction system that is not only economical in every respect - but also offers maximum quality and value retention.

Mortar
ZeroPlus Mortar is a mix of fine-ground sand, cement and other ingredients specific to Porotherm use:
Ancon have developed an innovative range of wall ties for use with cellular clay blockwork, where the horizontal bed joints are just 1mm. The range includes ties for internal wall junctions and internal/external cavity walls. The ties are manufactured from corrosion resistant stainless steel and are suitable for use in housing and commercial applications.
Rollers
A Roller to apply the ZeroPlus mortar allows for the swift and simple creation of true 1mm bed joints. Assembly methods for Porotherm are easy to understand, and the blocks can be laid extremely quickly to achieve a strong and accurate structure.
Lintels
Keystone have developed two lintels that can be used with the Porotherm Masonary System. These unique lintels offer a perfect cost effective solution that also enhance the thermal performance of a building. Both of these lintel options have been specifically designed to allow construction of the inner skin independently of the outer leaf. The Poro Lintels unique design enables this retrospective connection between the inner and outer leaf support lintels.
Parge Coat
A brushed on parge coat is an alternative to wet plaster parge coats to provide an airtight barrier prior to the application of plasterboard on dabs:
A range of cutting techniques are available to suit the system.
Fixings
Many off-the-shelf fixings are suitable for use with Porotherm, covering the complete range of light to heavy requirements.

Mortar
ZeroPlus Mortar is a mix of fine-ground sand, cement and other ingredients specific to Porotherm use:
- Mixed locally to laying, it allows for thin joints which still achieve full strength after 24 hours
- Unlike traditional mortar, which is often limited to use only when the temperature exceeds 3°C, ZeroPlus is able to be used from 0°C, allowing constructors to minimise weather related delays.
- Each 15kg pack requires just 3.6 litres of water and will lay 1 No. pack of blocks when applied by roller.

- Eco-parge is a high performance modern parge coat that has been specifically designed and tested for the fast application onto the Porotherm system. It has been engineered to increase airtightness and to optimise the sound and thermal performance of the system, prior to dry lining.
- Eco-parge can be easily applied by a brush ensuring fast, de-skilled application
A range of cutting techniques are available to suit the system.
