About Safety Technology International Ltd

Headquartered in Michigan, USA and European Office in Worcestershire, England, Safety Technology International Ltd (STI) is committed to providing professional and reliable products that help prevent false fire alarms, deter vandalism, misuse, tampering and theft.

Family owned and operated for over 35 years, STI take great pride in its products and exemplary service. The entire team works just as hard to make you a satisfied customer as we do to make the world a safer place, one product at a time.

STI manufacture an extensive and unique range of fire, safety and security products. Within the range are audible polycarbonate protective covers designed to retrofit over manual call points and reduce the risk of accidental or malicious false activations. Every false fire alarm is costly and disruptive to establishments and an avoidable amount of the tax payers’ money is wasted and unnecessary strain is put on the emergency services, as a result of false fire alarm call outs. A false alarm causes inconvenient evacuations, affecting routine by causing disruption amongst staff, visitors and the public.

One solution to tackle false alarms is to install a polycarbonate cover which will easily retrofit over any existing call points, providing instant protection. Covers are available with an optional, localised alarm which will help to prevent malicious activation. A 96 dB siren will activate and draw immediate attention to the area and the culprit. Accidental false fire alarms (e.g. a call point hit by a ball in a sports hall) can easily be prevented by installing call point covers. They can also provide a level of weather protection from IP24 to IP56, ideal for use indoor or outdoor, such as outdoor sports areas or swimming pools.

Also within the Stopper Line are alarm devices for fire extinguishers and fire doors. The Exit Stopper is a unique and highly effective way to alert you to any unauthorised exits or entries through emergency exit doors. It can also serve as an inexpensive security device and help prevent theft. It is available in red or green and can be mounted or installed on almost any type of door, including remote placement of the sounder. The highly visible ‘STOP’ sign discourages unauthorised use of emergency doors. New features include a dual language warning instruction labels, low battery indicator and a visual as well as audible warning alarm.

The Extinguisher Stopper is a sturdy, tamperproof, self-contained device which leaves the fire extinguisher completely accessible for emergencies but will prevent unwanted misuse or tampering. A cable wraps around the neck of the extinguisher and when removed from the unit will activate a powerful 95/105 dB alarm to alert to any misuse or removal of the Extinguisher. The alarm is also convenient in the case of a real emergency as it will alert people in the surrounding areas to the fire.

STI also stock an extensive and varied range of heavy-duty cages which have been specially designed to protect smoke detectors, beacons and more, from vandalism, misuse or accidental damage. Constructed from plastic coated, heavy-duty galvanised steel rod, the cages can withstand the severest of abuse, and the unique design means that they do not interfere with the operation of the protected device.

Further extending the range of products from STI, there is an extensive range of multi-purpose push buttons, resettable call points and switches available. With numerous activation choices, colours and label options the range that now incorporates the Stopper Stations and the new Global ReSet can accommodate a wide variety of applications around the World.

The Stopper Station series have been extremely successful in the USA and STI is excited to announce that the buttons can now fit a standard UK-type socket box. A surface mounting back box is also available. What has made the Stopper Stations so popular is that they incorporate a unique, patented design that dramatically stops accidental activations. The robust appearance makes them ideal for use in an industrial setting. STI covers can also be fitted to add an extra level of protection.

The range is continuously evolving and the latest investment is in the newest edition to the ReSet Call Point series, the UL listed Global ReSet. A unique manual call point mimics the feel of breaking glass whilst offering the user the benefits and environmental advantages of a resettable operating element. The dual mount feature can fit a standard UK-type socket box or a US-type gang box. A surface mounting back box is also available.

BS5839-1:2017 revision recommends protective covers for all manual call points

In a recent revision to the BS5839-1:2017 the British Standard Institute has recommended, in section 20.2 b) of the update, that: “All MCPs should be fitted with a protective cover, which is moved to gain access to the frangible elements.”

The changes come after the Fire Industry Association’s Fire Detection & Alarm Council presented their own recommendations for changes to BS5839-1:2017 to the BSI following findings showing that a shocking 44% of Fire and Rescue callout turn out to be false alarms. (Source: FIA website, 2017)

All manual call points that are placed in vulnerable areas and are prone to false activations should now be protected, without the need to consult your fire safety officers.

Safety Technology International (STI) supply a range of protective covers, from integral covers to sounder models; there are variations to suit all applications. These covers are specifically designed to prevent false alarms whether accidental or malicious.

STI Managing Director, Steve Hunt believes that the update to the British Standard will aid the decline in false fire alarms throughout the country.

He said: “The update to the British Standard strongly reinforces the work Safety Technology have been doing for over three decades. Our protective covers are designed to prevent false fire alarms and they are effective at doing so.”
