About Past & Present

Past and Present Antique Fireplace Centre was established in the North East 32 years ago in 1979. We have a huge stock of fireplaces, fenders and accessories, and 95% of our fireplaces are original antiques dated from as far back as early 1800’s, expertly restored to their former glory. We also have brochures and samples of modern day reproduction fireplaces available to look at, should none of our original fireplaces be suitable.

How to choose a fireplace suitable for your room
You can mix and match Surrounds and Inserts to suit your preferred style. For example, a cast iron insert can be paired with any surround such as wooden, slate or marble.

The hearth, which is what the fireplace sits on, can come in a range of materials such as marble, slate, granite or tiled, with the most popular being slate, in order to maintain originality. The hearth will match the length of the mantle shelf.

Tiles within tiled inserts can be changed to suit the colour scheme of your room.

If you want your fireplace to be in-keeping with the period of your property, we can advise you on which style will suit. Most of our fireplace descriptions contain a guide as to the period of the fireplace: Georgian, Regency, Victorian, Edwardian or Art Deco.

The first step when deciding which fireplace is best for you is to measure your chimney breast. The mantle shelf of the surround should fit within the chimney breast and not hang over. As a rule of thumb, the difference between the end of the mantle and end of the chimney breast is between 2 inches, up to a maximum of 14 inches.

The next step is then to decide if you would like to burn solid fuel, gas or electric. Any of our fireplaces can accommodate solid fuel or living flame gas fires. Electric fires come in standard 16" or 18" sizes - if you would like an electric fire inserted, then most of our fireplaces can accommodate this or be adapted to accommodate. If you would like us to explain this to you in more detail, please don't hesitate to give David a call and he will be more than happy to explain this to you.

Fitting
With over 30 years of experience in fitting all types of fires and surrounds, we assure an expert fitting. When you have selected your fireplace, we will deliver it to your door, prepare your chimney and brickwork and fit the fireplace to a high standard.

We can restore your fireplace in your own home!
So you like your fireplace, but it has lost its originality? You may want it to have a simple polish, repair it or give it a full restoration back to its original glory? Whatever you require, we have the knowledge and tools to restore any type of fireplaces to a high standard in your own home. We can supply fire bars, canopies and grates, if needed, to complete the restoration.

Original Fireplace recovery
Boarded up fireplaces can be revealed, restored and refitted to their former glory.

Restoration Process
A rusty fireplace is first of all placed into our corrosive acid tank and stripped back to the underlying material. It might then be welded in places in order to repair cracks or to fix parts back together. It may then be grinded and polished using high speed grinders. Following this process, a protective primer is sprayed onto the fireplace followed by an undercoat and finally a matt, satin or original black lead polish. From start to finish, this can take between 3 days and 3 weeks, depending upon the amount of work required and the amount of time it needs to be soaking in acid.
