BS 5228 - Construction Noise And Vibration
It is fairly common that local authorities would give planning permission on the proviso that BS5228 is adhered to during the construction phase of any development.
This is more often the case in quiet residential areas due to the construction noise being more apparent.
The noise impact survey would be undertaken with an initial study around the proposed construction site, giving a benchmark maximum noise level to which the contractor would have to comply.
We offer a professional and fully comprehensive service to the following sectors:
- Housing Developers
- Architects
- Businesses
- Industrial Companies
- Schools
- Home Owners

Planning Applications Our consultants have many years of Local Authority work experience behind them that sets them apart from just being good at acoustics so we can offer professional services to house builders, businesses, retail and individuals who require a smooth passage from inquiry to permission or compliance. New housing has to meet minimum internal noise levels that ensure protection from steady noise sources such as road, rail and air traffic. Houses built in noisier environments carry greater risk that noise may become an issue for future residents therefore the Local Planning Authority will look to the developer to minimize the risk. dB Consultation Ltd will undertake an environmental noise assessment utilizing the latest guidance in ProPG and BS 8233, experience, on site noise measurements, computer software and noise modelling to assess the risk from sources such as road, rail, air or commercial activity and ensure guideline internal noise levels will be met with sensible acoustic design. Architectural Acoustics At dB Consultation Ltd, we can work with architects in the early stages of any project to ensure that the building works are planned and completed, using the correct materials, correct methods of construction and without using unnecessary plant and equipment in the installation. We will offer advice on correct building procedures to ensure that Approved Document E guidelines are met and adhered to with respect to new build homes. Architectural Acoustics from Plan From a ''noise'' point of view, this can be split into 3 categories;
Without using Standard Approved Detail, pre completion testing is required to prove that the noise insulation is capable of reducing the noise transfer from one living space to another. This testing would be carried out through party walls and party ceilings. dB Consultation - Pre Completion Testing In 2003, the Building Regulations changed with the introduction of mandatory testing of 10% of all new attached properties, whether they are new build, conversions, or rooms for residential purposes. Developers must now supply the Building Control Body (BCB) with test certificates, proving that the new properties comply with the requirements as detailed in Approved Document E. All testing is in full compliance of BS EN ISO 140-4:1998 and BS EN ISO 140-7:1998. New Build Housing Utilising Standard Approved Detail When developing new build houses, the builder has the option of using standard approved section details or building from plan. At dB Consultation we can give advice on the use and limitations of use on standard details. By using standard section detail, the need for pre completion testing may be removed. | ![]() |
