Alexander Design is a practice of contemporary architects based in Winchester, Hampshire.

Following a career in London, the practice was formed by Principal John Alexander in 1991, and has grown significantly over the last 30 years to provide architectural services in the south of England.

Our architectural designs cover a broad portfolio of projects, over a wide range of sectors.

The most fundamental aspect of our approach is the pursuit and delivery of the highest design and construction standards within a sustainable framework. The successful creation of buildings which are flexible, efficient, enjoyable to use, and which express the dynamic, modern way we live and work, is the clear reward for that pursuit. These include: residential, leisure, arts, primary and secondary education, healthcare and community.

On any successful project, however large or small, the architect must recognise and satisfy not only the clients’ operational requirements, but also their future aspirations and responsibility. We believe that residential architects need to be committed to designing sustainable and affordable homes for the future, and we have completed many high-quality and environmentally conscious houses for private clients. Our architecture is contemporary but acutely sensitive to its context, whether a new building on a green-field site, works to a listed building, or urban regeneration.

As architects, our aim is to create high-quality yet affordable buildings, whether for community, commercial or private clients. A building must be an asset, regardless of the procurement route. We believe the fulfillment of brief is the best advert for Alexander Design and the client.

Sustainability
Sustainability has always been a fundamental design philosophy to Alexander Design. We have been pursuing a low-carbon strategy for many years. John Alexander won the Ibstock Design Award in 1984 for a low-carbon housing scheme long before this became topical. It is now a common requirement of many briefs, and gratifying that a wider community is now addressing these very important issues.

We believe that buildings should resolve most of their environmental issues with passive solutions, not just bolting technologies onto the building. This is achieved by ensuring the correct proportion and orientation of glazing, natural ventilation, suitable thermal mass and appropriate heating solutions, with sensible design strategies from the outset. Technologies have an essential role to play in the operation of the building, but without the correct building form, they are expensive gestures to a true green agenda.

This method of design ensures the impact of the building is well considered and responsive to the surrounding environment.

John is also a qualified BREEAM assessor (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method).
