A VIP Unveiling Of Cheshire East's Newest School

Crewe's new £21m state-of-the-art school was officially unveiled by two high-profile guests today, The Duke of Westminster and pop music mogul Pete Waterman – well-known for his links with the town's rail industry .

Sir William Stainer Community school, which caters for 1050 students, was built by Willmott Dixon Construction to a sustainable, low-carbon model, designed to have as small an environmental footprint and impact as possible. It replaces Coppenhall High School - on which former site it stands - and Victoria Community Technology School, which were amalgamated in 2007. The school opened its doors to pupils earlier this month following an 85-week build programme.

Councillor Paul Findlow, Portfolio Holder for Children & Families, said: "This is a very exciting time for the pupils, staff and governors of Sir Willliam Stanier Community School. It is also an immensely proud occasion for Cheshire East Council, reflecting our commitment to investment in education and young people in our area. This is not just the construction of a superb new building but the creation of a new learning environment where all pupils are encouraged to reach their full potential."

A key eco-friendly feature of the school is its south-east orientation, which gives passive heating in the winter without excessive heat gain in the summer. Solar control is achieved by the use of sun shading technology and the building benefits from intelligent lighting, which uses low energy lamps and sensors to regulate light levels. Up to 70% of water can be saved by the school's 'smart' washing facilities and toilets, while rainwater harvesting tanks reduce the need for mains water use. Approximately 20% of materials incorporated into the build were recycled, including blocks and road surfaces.

All classrooms are equipped with interactive white boards and ICT equipment.

The school buildings will be completed in 2010 with the opening of a multi-agency community facility which will be open during and after school hours. It will include sports, health and leisure facilities and a Community Police base.
