Construction Students Get Sneak Preview Of New Housing Development

Construction News Image
Lovell has given students from three Leicestershire secondary schools a behind-the-scenes look at the major housing regeneration scheme it is carrying out in Beaumont Leys, Leicester.

The company is building 135 new homes in Beaumont Leys – 95 for open market sale as well as 24 for shared ownership and 16 for affordable rent – in partnership with Midland Heart as part of a £13.5 million mixed tenure scheme. Lovell invited 14- and 15-year-old pupils from Fullhurst Community College, Braunstone; Longslade Community College, Birstall, and Riverside Business and Enterprise College, Leicester, to visit the new development and see it taking shape.

Lovell hosted the students after being approached by Leicestershire Education Business Company, a local education partnership which is supporting the teenagers through Young Apprenticeships in Construction. As part of their studies, the students are all working towards a Level 2 BTEC 1st Diploma qualification, which sees them learning about all aspects of the construction industry through work experience placements with contractors, training courses and site visits.

The Lovell site team gave the students a tour of the new development, showing them already completed homes and properties at various stages of construction.

"When Leicestershire Education Business Company asked us if it would be possible for the students to visit our site, we were only too pleased to help," explained Lovell Regional Training Advisor Sharon Tyer. "We hope that the tour has given them a greater understanding of how a new housing development is built and an idea of some of the skills they will need if they choose to pursue careers in the construction industry in the future."

At Beaumont Leys, Lovell is building 135 houses, apartments and bungalows on land formerly owned by Leicester City Council. The new development will create 95 homes for open market sale. In addition, Lovell is building 40 homes – 24 for shared ownership and 16 for affordable rent – for housing and regeneration group Midland Heart. The project is due to be completed later this year.
