Althon Precast Headwalls and Water Management
Althon Ltd manufacture and distribute specialist water management products to the construction industry.
We design and manufacture precast concrete headwalls to meet Sewers for Adoption and Severn Trent Guidelines. Our product range includes flap valves, penstocks and stop logs as well as trash screens and outfall safety grilles. Althon also manufacture precast concrete penstock chambers and offer a large range of commercial and industrial application drainage channels.

Althon precast concrete headwalls offer a cost effective alternative to in-situ headwalls pipework discharging into attenuation ponds, rivers, ditches, swales and tidal environments. We have ranges of Sewers for Adoption 7th Ed. and Severn Trent Water specification compliant headwalls. We offer a range of factory fitted accessories on our headwalls such as flap valves, penstocks, Kee Klamp® handrails, baffle blocks as well as gratings and trash screens.

Flow Control & Flood Prevention
Althon offer a range of specialist water management and flood prevention products such as HDPE flap valves, ductile iron flap valves, penstocks, Wastop inline non-return valves, stop logs, Tideflex duckbill and Checkmate valves. We offer flanged, wall mounted and tidal flap valves as well as wall mounted and inline penstocks.
We can factory fit most of these products to our precast headwalls or precast inspection chambers if required.

Great Yarmouth's Herring Bridge Project
In 2023, Althon supplied a number of precast concrete headwalls, to Great Yarmouth’s Third River Crossing (Herring Bridge). All of these headwalls were made to order, and the majority of these were supplied with fitted accessories such as Kee Klamp Handrail, HDPE Non return Flap Valves, and Pond Liner Brackets at our customer’s request. 10 years of manufacturing precast concrete inspection chambers
The Althon range of Chieftan precast concrete inspection chambers has been designed to make installation on-site as straightforward as possible. Each inspection chamber comes in two halves with a reinforced cover slab. The units are cast to order to suit any pipe openings and invert levels required. The real benefit of using a Chieftan concrete inspection chamber is in the ability to pre-fit accessories to the unit prior to delivery to site.

New H6C Headwalls
We have recently expanded our range of H6C headwalls, this now includes 3 new headwalls with level wing walls.
The new headwalls come in external backwall heights of 1100mm, 1550mm and 2050mm. All the headwalls in this range are designed to suit plastic or clay pipes up to 600mm and concrete pipes up to 450mm.

Heavy Duty Drainage Channel
Althon is now supplying a new heavy duty traffic drain which is an eco-friendly F900 load class drainage channel.
These are lighter than the comparable concrete channels making them considerably easier to install. It is a monolithic channel so there is no separate grating making it ideal for heavy traffic loadings.

Coloured precast concrete headwalls
Althon are now able to offer coloured headwalls for aesthetically sensitive areas. Our coloured concrete headwalls can help the installation blend into the surrounding landscape.
Althon use a colouring additive for cementitious materials. It provides a uniform streak free colour.
Colours shown are approximations of our colour mix in a typical concrete using mid grey Portland cement and having an as-cast surface. The final colour is affected by many influences.

Stainless Steel Mammal Shelves
Althon have recently supplied 22 meters of stainless steel mammal ledge to a project in Cheshunt. This project also required some bespoke sections to be designed to fit around the existing concrete structure.
Adding mammal ledges allows wildlife to pass through a culvert or under bridges more safely and therefore reduces the risk of drowning.

Bitumen waterproofing on headwalls
We have recently supplied several headwalls to a project on the A5 in Leicestershire. The specification called for two coats of bitumen waterproofing to be applied to all buried surfaces. The bitumen waterproofing was applied at the factory allowing the Headwall to be lifted directly into place on site without the need for any additional work to be carried out. Avonmouth Headwalls
We have recently supplied several of our precast concrete headwalls fitted with Kee Klamp® handrails and a mesh infill. The mesh infill helps to provide extra security in the handrail and we can add this to any of our existing galvanised handrail options.

New AH8C and AH9C headwall ranges
We are pleased to announce we have two new ranges of precast concrete headwalls. The AH8C and AH9C angled headwall ranges allow the water to discharge at 90 degrees to the waterflow or body of water. If specified with the correct sized toe the AH8C headwalls meets Sewerage Sector Guidance (SSG). The range is available with two back wall height and two toe thickness options each with three depth options.

Flap Valves
What are Flap Valves?
Flap valves and flap gates are a type of non-return valve (NRV) used to prevent flooding and to stop water back-flowing up pipework connecting into ponds, ditches, swales, rivers and marine or tidal environments.
What type do you offer?
Our range of flap valves and flap gates includes wall mounted flap valves, tidal flap valves, flange mounted flap valves as well as push fit and pipe mounted flap valves. As standard our HDPE flap valves have a 50 year design life. Althon HDPE flap valves can be manufactured to suit site specific installation requirements and operating water pressures.
Can I have a flap valve factory fitted to an Althon Headwall?
Yes! Althon flap valves can be factory fitted to our precast concrete headwalls and chambers. For installation on site by others we supply a EPDM seal, stainless steel fixings and chemical anchors.

SFA15 Headwall Installation
Some great installation images we have been sent from a project in Wales. This is one of our SFA15C precast concrete headwalls complete with Toe beam, 3 Sided Kee Klamp, gate, ladder and a walkthrough. Cryddan Brook Headwall
Althon have recently supplied a bespoke precast concrete headwall to Cyrddan Brook. The headwall needed to be rectangular and accommodate a 1050mm ID PCC pipe. We were able to design a suitable headwall plus factory fit Kee Klamp handrail and a cranked grating complete with catwalk, this made installation much faster and safer.

Headwalls in attenuation ponds
Balancing ponds or attenuation ponds are a vital flood prevention method. You will often see these attenuation ponds complete with headwalls, on new construction projects such as housing estates, new roadways etc. The purpose of them is during heavy or prolonged wet weather the drainage system on new construction projects can be overwhelmed due to the sheer amount of excess water being discharged. The attenuation pond is designed to control the amount of excess water entering the drainage system to reduce the likelihood of flooding.
The headwalls in the photos we have factory fitted one with a close coupled grating and the other with a penstock which can control and isolate water, cranked grating over the valve and 3 sided kee klamp for fall protection.

Extra Large SFA headwall
A recently cast SFA headwall with extension pieces added to make it wider. This headwall is made to suit 2 x 1800mm concrete pipes and is currently being factory fitted with an SFA hinged and lockable outfall grating. It also has a separate toe beam and Kee Klamp handrail will be factory fitted before it arrives on site.

Cladding precast concrete headwalls
We have recently supplied several splayed and rectangular precast concrete headwalls with dovetail slots, flap valves and gratings for a project in Horsham. When a client wishes to clad our precast concrete headwalls and they also require factory fitted accessories we simply still predrill the headwalls with the fixing points and then supply site with longer fixings making installation much safer and faster.
All the headwalls have now been installed and cladded by site and we think the finished result looks great.

Level Invert on Headwalls
The photo below is one of our smaller RSFA headwalls (RSFA18B 01 1150) showing a great example of when a customer requires the pipe ID at level invert. We cast in a slightly larger opening than the OD of the pipe to make installation easier on site, once the pipe is in the correct position site will fill the void around the pipe with high strength non shrink grout. The SFA1 Outfall Safety Grille is fitted to the headwall 150mm up from the spillway as standard when the pipe ID is level with the spillway.

Custom built GMS cranked grating, mesh catwalk and handrail
At Althon we can offer standard and custom built gratings to suit any of our precast concrete headwalls. All gratings, catwalks and handrails can be custom designed and built to suit any site requirements. The gratings will then be factory fitted to our headwalls to make sure they fit, only being removed for delivery loading/offloading purposes.
The image shows one of our standard RSFA headwalls with a custom built rakeable cranked grating, mesh catwalk for standing on and added handrail for protection. The photo was taken before the metal work had been galvanised.

Reducing our carbon footprint
In 2021 Althon saved 626 tonnes carbon by using GGBS as cement substitute. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and are constantly looking into new products and methods of production and delivery to help us achieve this.
Concrete suppliers and designers, and in turn their clients and customers, can use concrete to minimise carbon footprints by: optimising mix, the efficient use of materials and recognising the carbon uptake potential of concrete to permanently sequester CO2 in buildings. Concrete can also be reused and at end of life is 100% recyclable.

Headwalls with Orifice Plates
Althon have recently supplied several SFA headwalls (headwalls that are compliant with Sewerage Sector Guidance) factory fitted with bespoke orifice plates. Orifice plates can be manufactured in either galvanized or stainless steel and they are designed to restrict and regulate the flow of water. We can manufacture the orifice plates to suit multiple openings or one opening in any position required on the plate.
In this instance the customer was using a 1200mm ID pipe coming into the back of the headwall and wanted 3No. 73mm, 87mm and 103mm holes in the orifice plate to restrict the flow. We also then added stitch welds to strengthen the plate.

Welded and Powder Coated Handrail
We can factory fit Handrail to any of our precast concrete headwalls and our standard is Galvanised Kee Klamp ® size 8 fittings which complies with Civil Engineering Specification for the Water Industry (CESWI) 7th Edition Clause 2.60 Handrails & Balusters & The Engineering Equipment and Materials Users' Association (EEMUA) Publication 105 7th Edition Factory Stairways, Ladders and Handrails.

Bespoke headwall and grating
The headwall and grating shown are a bespoke design based on a clients sketch for a project in Downderry, Cornwall. The headwall only required 1 wingwall due to the customer wanting a concrete footpath on the right hand side that the headwall would then butt up against. The trash screen required a working platform for maintenance purposes and is manufactured to BS EN 1090 standards.

Large RSFA Headwalls
We already have a range of RSFA headwalls which have been designed in accordance with Severn Trent Water Standard details STD6002 for pipework up to 600mm & a back wall height of 1100mm. However, we have had a lot of requests for rectangular headwalls for larger pipe sizes & taller back wall heights. With the increase in height Severn Trent Water require steps for access rather than a ladder. The image below is a recent bespoke headwall we have manufactured to suit a 1200mm PCC pipe, factory fitted with a SFA1 1200 Outfall Safety Grille, Steps and Kee Klamp Handrail. Althon have recently supplied a large headwall to accommodate a 1500mm ID pipe factory fitted with HDPE flap valves and bespoke sections.
For this project we were able to use one of our standard narrow headwalls with two extension pieces cast on the left hand side to create the angled spillway the customer required.

Althon CPD course now available - 'Specifying the right headwall for your application'
Althon are pleased to announce our new CPD certified course ‘Specifying the right headwall for your application’. The primary focus of the course is to help engineers and specifiers with identifying the correct headwall for their application, including information on where you would use Sewers for Adoption headwalls and how to make sure you are compliant with a section 104 agreement.
The course is also relevant to our Builders’ Merchant client base, to enhance knowledge regarding headwalls and to enable them to assist their customers in depth.
Althon also wish to raise awareness of the different accessories that can be both pre and retro-fitted onto headwalls, to aid with water management. These include flap valves, penstock gates, Wastop and Tideflex valves alongside Kee Klamp hand rails and many more.
The course covers in detail the critical dimensions that you need to know in order to the select the correct headwall and or/accessories. A checklist is provided, so that customers can make sure they’re getting the required details when liaising with clients. New Vermin Gratings
Althon have just launched two new Vermin Gratings, the pipe mounted vermin gate in 304 stainless steel and also the vermin mesh grille PN16 flange in 316 stainless steel.
Pipe mounted vermin gates in 304 stainless steel are hinged at the top to allow passage in the direction of flow but will prevent rats and other vermin climbing back up the pipe.
Vermin mesh grilles with a PN16 flange in 316 stainless steel are designed to fit between two flanged pipes or fittings, or at the end of a flanged pipe run to prevent rodents and other vermin entering connecting pipework.

Anglian Water Approved Headwalls
Althon Ltd are pleased to announce that their ‘Sewers for Adoption’ range of Headwalls have been approved for use on projects that are to be adopted under a Section 104 agreement by Anglian Water Services Ltd. Althon can advise on the most appropriate product from our range to suit the site requirement. The full range of acceptable Headwalls are available to view drawings and download here. Consultants should specify the particular Headwall they intend to use when making their application allowing Anglian Water Services to review and ensure it is fit for purpose in the location proposed. Althon have launched a Headwall Design Tool to enable you to specify the headwall you require with associated factory fitted accessories.
We have produced a Headwall Design Request Form where you fill out as much information as possible. We will then send you a CAD & PDF drawing of your chosen headwall and will liaise with you to further refine the design to suit your specific requirements if required.
Headwall accessories include but are not limited to flap valves, penstocks, cascade panels, dissipation blocks, V notch weirs, handrails, gates & ladders.

Headwalls with Tideflex Valves
Althon can manufacture concrete headwalls with Tideflex duckbill valves. We factory fit the duckbill valves to our precast concrete headwalls ensuring they fit properly and reducing installation time on site. Factory fitting duckbill valves to headwalls also means the headwalls do not have to be drilled on site which has great health and safety benefits.

Sewers For Adoption Headwalls For Marina
Althon have recently supplied 2No. SFA27D Headwalls with bolt on toes to suit 1200mm dia concrete pipes to Upton upon Severn Marina.
All Althon SFA headwalls and toes are cast with lifting points for easy and quick offloading, transporting and installing into their final position. No need for any specialised lifting equipment just standard lifting hooks are chains are need to move the headwalls and toes.

Box Culvert Headwalls
Althon has new range of precast concrete Box Culvert Headwalls to suit a maximum internal box culvert of 2650mm wide x 1750mm high. All of Althon's CSP Culvert headwalls can be factory fitted with gratings, flap valves, Kee Klamp handrail, penstocks and other flow control devices. Toe depths are also available up to 1000mm and come in thickness of 300 or 500mm.

The AH4C Angled headwall has been designed specifically to meet the Environment Agency’s ‘Standard rules SR2015 No 27 –
Constructing an outfall pipe of 300mm diameter through a headwall into a main river & Exempt flood risk activities: environmental permits section FRA12 ‘Outfall pipes less than 300mm diameter through a headwall’. The AH4C allows water to discharge at a 45 Deg. angle, the Environment Agency’s preferred method when discharging into a watercourse. Available with three different back wall heights and a separate Toe in three depth options that ensure not only is it easier to handle but easier to install & more importantly ensures the foundation around the toe and beneath the Headwall structure can be well compacted.
