Fit handrails faster with our cool new connectors

Staircase manufacturer Pear Stairs is proud to announce a range of new accessories that can save valuable installation time for carpenters and joiners.
Connecting handrails to stair balustrades has just become quicker and easier thanks to some brand new products from the Solution collection, specially designed for use with the popular Pear Stairs standard profile and low profile wooden handrails.
First up is a shiny modern metal bracket that enables fitters to speedily fasten stair and landing handrails to the newel posts. There is no need for any complex carpentry work – the installer only has to secure the bracket to one end of the handrail with the provided screws, place up against the newel post, mark the spot, drill, then fasten in place. The connectors come in a brushed nickel or chrome finish and are suitable for both stairs and landings.
To complete the handrail, Pear Stairs can supply some elegant Solution end caps. Made from zinc alloy and finished in brushed nickel or chrome, they will add a stylish touch to the stairs as well as concealing any unsightly cut ends – so expert DIY skills are not essential! The end caps have fixing holes underneath to aid fitting, and are supplied complete with screws. Available in two sizes, they are designed for use with the Pear Stairs standard profile and low profile handrails.
Visit www.pearstairs.co.uk for prices and further details.

Outdoor railings are a doddle to install

Staircase design and manufacturing company Pear Stairs doesn’t only focus on interiors – it supplies external barriers, handrail systems and metal staircases as well. And thanks to a clever new clamping system, installation is a doddle! To prove it, last week staff built a barrier and outdoor staircase at the Llandrindod Wells branch of parent company Boys & Boden Ltd over the course of a single weekend.
Construction was so quick because the components, made from galvanised malleable iron, come in modular form, with every part interchangeable - so it is easy to mix and match to create the perfect layout. As well as safety barriers and handrails, the system is ideal for wheelchair access ramps, balconies, playground equipment, market stalls, greenhouses, exhibition stands, cattle pens, indoor play areas, shop fittings, sports practice nets and much more.
The beauty of these fittings is that they are designed for speed. You can easily put together simple rigid structures by hand with the minimum of tools. No welding or specialist equipment is required, saving time and money.
In addition to standard fittings, Pear Stairs sells the Assist range of tube clamps. Specifically designed to help companies comply with the requirements of the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) and Building Regulations Part M:2004, the components allow users to quickly create flush joints. There will be no problem incorporating the parts into an existing older structure, or into a brand new one.
The company also supplies galvanised steel external staircases, such as the one pictured above, on a bespoke basis. For further details and an individual quote, contact designer Richard Evans at Pear Stairs on 01938 553311

Handy hemlock will suit any style of stairs

Hemlock is an attractive, extremely versatile timber that is becoming more and more popular as a cost-effective substitute for white oak and ash. Grown abundantly across North America, where it can reach up to 60 metres in height, this sustainable softwood is cherished for its subtle growth rings and straight, clear grain that is practically knot-free.
With a uniform density throughout, the timber will accept stain or paint easily and can be varnished to a pale amber sheen or a rich golden brown, depending on personal taste and whether you're aiming for a contemporary or traditional look.
Pricewise, hemlock sits roughly midway between pine and oak, making it a good choice if you don't want to splash out on a premium timber but aren't overly keen on the knotty character of pine.
As it has a fairly even texture, the grain is easy to work with – and being less brittle, and therefore stronger, than many hardwoods, it won’t split or crack while being shaped. This makes hemlock ideal for all kinds of joinery uses, including furniture, doors, floors, interior mouldings and, of course, staircase components.
At Pear Stairs we can produce almost any type of bespoke staircase in hemlock or a range of other timbers, and we also sell stair parts through our online shop. Have a look at some of our case studies for inspiration, or try designing your own stairs using our online planning tool, the StairCreator.

Pear Stairs helps out on BBC TV show

We enjoyed a trip down memory lane over the Christmas period, when one of the most memorable episodes of DIY SOS: The Big Build aired again on the BBC. Here's how Pear Stairs helped...
At Pear Stairs we are always keen to play an active part in the community and help worthy causes where we can - so we were delighted when the BBC repeated a particularly poignant episode of their flagship home improvement show DIY SOS: The Big Build, for which we supplied and installed a staircase.
Originally shown in the autumn of 2016, the programme featured Joe Grafton, a widowed ex-firefighter, and his seven-year-old daughter Lucy, who were sharing a tiny caravan in the garden of their semi-derelict cottage in Hopesay, south Shropshire, following a series of tragedies which left them in desperate straits.
After Joe's wife died suddenly he was left to continue the renovation of their home alone, but with few resources as a severe back injury had recently forced him to give up the job he loved. However, disaster struck when a stream was discovered under the foundations. The property was left an empty shell, with only half a staircase, bare walls, no kitchen, bathroom or bedrooms, and nowhere for Lucy to play.
But the local community came together, and concerned neighbours wrote to the producers of DIY:SOS for help. TV presenter Nick Knowles and an army of volunteers swept in and completed all the refurbishment works, inside and out, in just nine days. They even persuaded Severn Trent to install a mains water supply so Joe wouldn't have to keep using the old well.
Our team at Pear Stairs were only too pleased to help the project by designing, constructing and fitting a smart new wooden staircase free of charge to replace the old stairs, which were partly missing and too dangerous to use. At last, the upper floor could be reached without a stepladder!

Pear Stairs team member steps up for marathon challenge

Stairs aren’t just for getting from A to B – they can help you get fit too, as our purchasing manager is finding out…
Stairs are great for your health. Scientific studies show that going up eight flights of stairs a day can greatly improve your fitness and reduce your risk of early death by as much as a third. So popular has this type of exercise become that charity stair-climbing races have become a regular feature in many UK cities.
As climbing stairs uses up more energy than jogging, it’s a brilliant way of losing weight – and of course the heavier you are to start with, the more calories you can burn off. It’ll also do wonders for your blood pressure.
Because our offices here are up a winding flight of stairs, one of our staff members is taking the opportunity to get in some extra training to prepare for this year’s London Marathon. Purchasing manager Andy Griffiths will be running to raise funds for the renowned Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. Based near the Welsh border, the hospital is a leading centre for knee and hip replacements, and enjoys a global reputation for the quality of its research.
As a marathon newbie, Andy has thrown himself into training with the zeal of the newly converted. Manfully resisting the lure of the pub and local takeaway, in January alone he notched up 101 miles pounding the streets, and swam more than five miles. His proudest achievement so far is an epic 72-mile cycle ride - almost, he admitted afterwards, the straw that broke the camel's back!
Andy said: “I've never run a marathon before so to add to this challenge, I'm aiming to run it in under four hours. This is going to be a huge effort from me, not only on race day but from now and the months leading up to the big day! All donations will go towards the hospital and to help fund research and new treatments, providing state of the art facilities as well as extra comfort for all patients.”
