Calvert Brain & Fraulo Ltd is a well established West Norfolk practice of consulting engineers with extensive experience in the East of England extending over the past 30 years.

Whilst we have particular expertise in the design of building structures we also have considerable experience in many other associated disciplines and can offer professional services, not restricted purely to structural and civil engineering, but embracing the full spectrum of building and construction.

We offer professional consulting engineering services to clients through all stages of a project from conception to completion and regularly work in the commercial, industrial, retail, public and residential sectors, carrying out the design and detailing of a wide range of projects.

We can offer the following services:

• Structural design
  Our engineers and technical staff are highly experienced in the design and detailing of foundations, steel frames, reinforced concrete, timber, load bearing masonry and they engineer designs to optimise both form and method of construction to provide practical and cost effective solutions.

Due to our location in King’s Lynn, with the surrounding fens in close proximity, we are highly experienced in the design of foundation solutions in poor ground conditions and regularly design raft and piled foundation solutions.

We operate specialist software for the design of building structures with particular expertise in the design of steel frames, both portal frames for commercial and industrial applications and pinned braced frames for low rise and multi storey buildings.

As well as the more complex design work we also regularly undertake the design of more modest works, including the design of isolated steel beams and other design work required for domestic residential new build and extensions.


• Structural surveys
  CBF Ltd have extensive experience in the preparation of structural surveys for all types of buildings, undertaking surveys to identify and comment on specific defects or full and comprehensive structural surveys, typically relating to the purchase of commercial or residential property.

We are often asked to interpret defects raised in reports by other professionals to identify and comment upon more complex structural defects. We conduct investigations into subsidence in association with insurance companies and loss adjusters, exposing foundations and investigating ground conditions to assist with identification of the cause of movement, thus enabling us to report on the issues and recommend the required remedial works. Where appropriate monitoring of cracks in buildings is undertaken.

We can provide external and internal measured surveys of all types of existing property with survey drawings produced in digital format. We also regularly undertake schedules of condition, recording the current condition of a building prior to planned building work adjacent or nearby, often as part of an appointment as party wall surveyor.


• Civil engineers
  CBF Ltd regularly undertakes the design of small to medium sized civil engineering projects including car and lorry parking, drainage schemes and water storage reservoirs (also see below). Our experienced team of engineers design all types of foundations, especially piled and raft foundations associated with the poor ground conditions found in the Fens of East Anglia.


• Party wall surveyors
  The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 deals with works to party walls, the formation of deep excavations in close proximity to existing buildings and the construction / repair of walls on the line of junction (boundary).
  CBF Ltd have undertaken numerous commissions as party wall surveyors since the introduction of the Act outside of the London area.
  We have a thorough knowledge of this legislation and we believe that our engineering background is beneficial in assessing the implications and requirements of the Act.
