How To Create An Eco-Friendly Garden

Butterfly on purple flower

If you're lucky enough to have a garden, you have a unique opportunity to create an eco friendly space that will not only benefit the environment, but provide you with your very own little sanctuary, away from the hustle, bustle and stresses of everyday life.

So how do you go about creating an environmentally friendly, sustainable garden? Well, there are lots of ways, from increasing biodiversity to using recycled materials to reduce your carbon footprint. In this post we'll take a look at some of the ways you can go about creating your eco friendly garden, without breaking the bank.

We pride ourselves on sourcing environmentally friendly and sustainable products for all manner of building, renovation and landscaping projects. From landscaping to garden maintenance and cleaning we've got everything you might need for your project.
Ways to create an eco friendly garden

Sustainability, environmentalism and carbon neutrality are all hot topics at the moment - and for good reason. The UK is working toward a net zero target by 2050, and the creation of eco friendly gardens is one way we can all help contribute toward achieving that goal. The great thing is your garden, or outdoor space, doesn't need to stretch for acres in order for you to be able to do so. In fact balconies, shared garden spaces and even windowsills offer the potential to create an environment that will encourage wildlife and beneficial insects to visit.

Plant wildlife friendly plants

We all know how crucial the role of pollinators is for ensuring food sustainability. Loss of suitable habitat is a major cause of the decrease in bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects visiting our gardens. Support pollinator diversity by producing a diverse range of garden plants, including native, near-native, and exotic varieties to encourage pollinator species.

Read The Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) comprehensive guide to the best flora to attract wildlife.
Use sustainable and recycled landscaping materials

Create a connection between your garden and the surrounding environment by utilising locally accessible materials, simultaneously reducing the carbon footprint of your landscaping project by minimising the requirement for long distance transportation.

Try to use natural or reclaimed materials like natural stone, reclaimed aggregate paving or recycled hardwearing plastics and when it comes to planting try to find flowers and shrubs which are sold without plastic pots, and where possible you can even try to trade with friends, family and neighbours.

Surface run off is a major contributor to water pollution as oils, pesticides, dirt, bacteria and other pollutants are deposited into our streams, rivers, lakes and oceans. Using permeable construction materials enables surface water to become groundwater, which is filtered and cleaned naturally by porous layers of soil.

We stock a range of biodegradable and sustainable landscaping products, from mulching and weed suppression nets to water permeable paving for paths and driveways.

Rainwater harvesting

The use of rainwater collection systems has several ecological advantages but primarily it leads to a substantial reduction in the amount of mains water used. This means that less water will need to be artificially drawn from the environment, relieving pressure on finite ground water sources. Rainwater harvesting can also help to reduce surface runoff, minimising soil erosion and reducing the risk of potential flooding.

The water harvested can be used for a range of different things, from watering garden plants and flushing toilets to cooking and drinking (this requires the use of methods such as UV filtration in order to be safe for human consumption).

Water harvesting systems could also help save up to 50% on water bills each year (which have been predicted by Water UK to be between £412 to £419 per annum for the average household).

TIP: Planting drought tolerant plants reduces the requirement for irrigation helping to minimise water usage.

We stock a selection of rainwater harvesting systems which are easy to install and structurally guaranteed for 25 years.

5 Benefits Of Natural Paints

5 Benefits Of Natural Paints

If you're looking for a way to make your home more eco-friendly, you should consider using natural paints. Eco-friendly paints are made with natural ingredients, while traditional paints often contain harsh and potentially dangerous chemicals. Not only are eco-friendly paints better for the environment, but they also have a lot of other benefits, which we will go into detail about below.

If you'd like to know about any of our eco-friendly paints, or would like some help or advice regarding an upcoming or ongoing project we'd love to hear from you. Call us today on 01793 847 444, or email us at info@ecomerchant.co.uk.
What is eco-friendly paint?

Many traditional wall paints contain hazardous chemicals known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's). These substances are what make paint potentially hazardous and can trigger a range of unpleasant side effects including irritation (especially for persons with asthma or other sinusitis issues) as well as headaches, nausea and dizziness. In contrast, eco-friendly paints typically utilise natural ingredients and have very low to near zero VOC levels. We display certification and declarations for all of our paints, stains, adhesives, sealants and other finishing and ancillary products to ensure that you know exactly what each contains before deciding to use them for your project.
Benefits of natural paint
Minimal environmental impact

Conventional paint and paint related products including strippers and thinners often contain harmful chemicals like toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, formaldehyde, methylene chloride and glycol. Some older paints (used pre 1978) actually contained lead - which is now known to be poisonous.

These harmful chemicals not only pose a threat to the health of painters, decorators and inhabitants but also to our environment - through the by-products of manufacture as well as the improper disposal of paint cans. Oil based paints are particularly bad polluters, potentially releasing dangerous compounds into our waterways and groundwater. Acrylic based paints are also contributors to high levels of pollution as a result of their plastic constituents.

Organic paint is typically water based and made using natural ingredients (such as linseed oil, chalk and other mineral pigments), offering a far friendlier alternative with little to no compromise on quality. In fact in many cases new eco friendly paints exceed the quality of older paints.
Very low, or near zero VOC levels

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) are present in nearly all paints. These compounds are released in high quantities during the manufacturing of these products, which has a detrimental effect on our environment, specifically causing damage to the ozone. In short, VOC does not mean harmful and no VOC does not mean harmless. If you really want to use a paint that is truly healthier for you, then look into products that have been used successfully by the chemically sensitive. It is not sufficient for manufacturers to simply state that their ingredient list is a trade secret. Without accurate information, especially a full declaration, it is nearly impossible to know how each component within a product will react with each other, let alone how it reacts to humans and the environment.

In addition, one would expect to have fewer health issues with substances found in nature then synthetic chemicals that are man made. It is also worth noting, that disposal of products manufactured from natural raw materials create or have less impact on the environment when reused or disposed of.

VOCs are also released when you paint (or strip) walls with these products and these chemicals can stay in the air for up to 6 months. VOC's produce non biodegradable and non-recyclable chemical waste. In comparison, environmentally friendly paints have extremely low VOC levels, or are virtually VOC free. Watch out for zero VOC claims, there are less harmful VOCs, for example those from citrus oils, and much more toxic ones for example formaldehyde.. The UK Advertising Standards Agency does not accept VOC free claims as having any veracity, instead ultra low levels are described as just that or as near zero allowing for the presence of either less harmful emissions or the absence of toxic ones.

Retrofitting To Regulations

The retrofit market is large and growing, fuelled in part by the need to make our buildings more energy-efficient and resilient but also to help meet our nationally declared carbon targets.

The 2022 introduction of changes to the Approved Documents includes changes to:

Part L building regulations (for energy efficiency)
A new part F (for ventilation)
The introduction of part O (for overheating)

These are applicable to retrofit provided that “building work” be carried out so that it complies with the requirements contained in Schedule 1.

The regulations apply to any retrofit project that falls under the definition of “building work” including the material alteration of a building, where the work would result in the dwelling or commercial property no longer complying with previous requirements and certain energy efficiency improvements including the renovation of improved thermal resistance or reduction of heat loss in the building.

If a project had Building Regulations approval before 15 June 2022 then the old standards still apply, you have until 15 June 2033 to begin the work before the approval lapses.
Part L regulation changes

Hidden away in plain sight in part L is the option to gain compliance through reaching threshold U values and demonstrating a payback of under 15 years, rather than simply sticking to the headline U value.

Part L now allows for U-values up to 0.70 for walls and floors and 0.35 for roofs where improvements are made to existing elements, providing certain criteria are met. If achieving improved U-values either:

is not technically or functionally feasible or
would not achieve a simple payback of 15 years or less

then the element should be upgraded to the lowest U-value that both:

is technically and functionally feasible and
can achieve a simple payback not exceeding 15 years.

An example of something that is not technically feasible would be when a system requires breathable insulation with a higher thermal conductivity when non-breathable insulation with a lower thermal conductivity is proposed.

Natural insulation materials are a perfect solution for broadening the range of applications that are in full compliance with the updated regulations and also meet the U value and hygrothermal requirements of the element to be upgraded. This is of significant benefit for solid wall applications where synthetic alternatives may create additional moisture control issues.

The updated building regulations are intended to improve energy efficiency and require a combined approach to reducing air leakage and increasing the thermal resistances of the building shell. Both are closely linked as is clear in the building regulations guidance notes. Improvements must link improved thermal performance to sufficient or adequate ventilation, while reducing air leakage.

Arguably the primary requirement to note for retrofitting is that when energy efficiency work is done in existing homes, the ventilation must not be made any worse, in line with existing measures for controlled services and fittings.
Natural Materials and Retrofitting Projects

The use of natural materials for retrofit projects seems to be being driven by several factors, but as new regulations make few positive changes to retrofit, we need to look elsewhere for guidance (or activity) that is driving the use of natural materials, specifically in retrofit.
