About London Handrails

Whether you have a single flight staircase in your own home or require a full installation at your corporate HQ we can help. With extensive experience of all sectors within the industry you can be confident that we understand your needs.

Choose your look
We specialise in contemporary and traditional handrails as well as repairs to older handrails.

Wooden handrail can be very complex. We achieve our quality finish by using an appropriate set of tools and skills. Traditional tooling is required for certain jobs along with the traditional skills associated with this trade. Other situations demand ultra-modern CNC machinery to produce the natural sweeping curves combined with the crisp detail of the profile to perfectly present the natural beauty of your chosen wood. The final finish and durability being created by the care and skill of the polisher.

Planning Services
The most important part of any job is in the preparation. Therefore this is where we pay particular attention to detail.

There are many factors to be considered from concept through to completion;
  • The legal requirements.

  • The design and layout.

  • Safety of those around the staircase whilst no handrail is fitted.

  • An accurate survey of the staircase.

  • Safe working area during installation.

  • Scheduling.

  • The pattern of handrail to be used.

  • The type of wood.

  • The finished look.

  • The protective Finish.

These are all factors that are taken into account when we plan your installation and will enhance the process of carrying out the job to your requirements.

Surveying Service
Being the first service in the practical side of the handrail work it is imperative to get this right. Every measurement must be accurate, also if there are any irregularities in the staircase they need to be identified before manufacture of the handrail to ensure a clean flowing feel to it, any discrepancy will look and feel wrong on completion.

All our surveyors have fitting and manufacturing knowledge which enables them to recognise any pitfalls that may arise during the manufacture and installation processes. This avoids costly delays later in the job and helps to 'design in' a high quality finish.

The survey itself can be performed in two different ways. The traditional method with a tape measure or digitally scanning the layout of the handrail. This is especially useful in the more modern design of handrail that is set on glass, and also for use with core rail: a steel strap sitting on spindles that is then covered in wooden handrail.

Manufacture
The manufacturing process has changed over the last few years; with the advent of CNC machinery (Computer Numerical Control) becoming a very useful, and far safer way of creating the component parts required for handrails.

These are very versatile machines, but the final output still depends on the person programming it. This is where a traditional understanding of handrail design can influence the end result giving the elegance of a traditionally crafted handrail.

Using this technology and combining it with skilled craftsmen to do the final detailed carving and sanding, means the end result is of outstanding quality both in design and finish.

Fitting Services
Staircases and handrails are a very specialised side of the joinery industry. Even more so when it comes to curved stairs and handrails. The strength in the handrail comes from two main factors; the timber used and the accuracy in getting the joints cut precisely, allowing the bolts and glue to work together. This also adds to the natural beauty of the handrail as any open joints would leave black lines and a difference in levels where the sections meet.

Finishing
Finishing is the final part of the of the handrail jigsaw. Once all the manufacturing, fitting, carving and sanding is completed it's time to make the wooden handrail a splended feature.

Our polishers work with the same passion for detail as everyone else in the previous processes, as not only do they have to make the handrail look lovely, they have the practical challenge of its protection, leading to the durability of a sustained finish, protecting the wood from years of wear and tear, and also the effect of heating if indoors or the seasonal element if an external rail.
